Brock wing Madalyn Weinert was named recipient of the Nan Copp Award as national player of the year. The 5-10 fifth-year wing and medical sciences student from St. Catharines, Ont. (Eden High), was the Ontario University Athletics player of the year for the third consecutive year. A repeat All-Canadian first-team selection, she led the league in scoring. Weinert started all 22 OUA regular season games, playing an average 34.0 mpg. She hit 196-381 (.514) from the floor, 20-62 (.323) from the arc and 118-136 (.868) from the line, while garnering 317 boards, including 81 on the offensive glass and a 14.4 rpg, 59 fouls (fouling out three times), 61 assists, 55 turnovers, a 2.8 asst/to ration, 43 blocks, 42 steals and 530 points, for a 24.1 ppg. Western guard Sydney Cowan was named recipient of the Kathy Shields Award as national rookie of the year. The 5-9 guard and kinesiology major from London, Ont. (Mother Theresa Catholic) started 21 of 22 OUA regular season games, playing an average 28.5 mpg. She hit 134-329 (.407) from the floor, 50-152 (.329) from the arc and 40-57 (.702) from the line, while garnering 71 boards, including 23 on the offensive glass and a 3.2 rpg, 23 fouls, 53 assists, 19 turnovers, a 2.8 asst/to ratio, 7 blocks, 64 steals and 358 points, for a 16.3 ppg.
Calgary guard Amélie Collin was named national defensive player of the year. The 5-9 fifth year guard from Rimouski, Que. (Trois-Rivieres CEGEP) was the Canada West defensive player of the year, while breaking the league’s record for career steals. “Amélie is the most tenacious defender I have ever had the pleasure of coaching. She has such natural instincts when it comes to anticipating off ball. Every game we call on her to guard the opponent’s best players, and she consistently holds them under their points-per-game average. Her records will stand for a long time in our program and in Canada West,” said Dinos coach Sarah Besselink. Collin started all 20 regular season Canada West games, playing an average 26.6 mpg. She hit 80-193 (.415) from the floor, 33-84 (.393) from the arc and 49-64 (.766) from the line, while garnering 69 boards, including 25 on the offensive glass and a 3.5 rpg, 53 fouls, 67 assists, 47 turnovers, a 1.4 asst/to ratio, 1 block, 98 steals and 242 points, for a 12.1 ppg.
Saskatchewan coach Lisa Thomaidis was named recipient of the Peter Ennis Award as national coach of the year. Thomaidis was the Canada West coach of the year for the third consecutive campaign. In her 27th year at the helm, she led the Huskies to a 20-0 regular season record and a uSports national title. “With this record-breaking season, Coach Thomaidis and our women’s basketball program continues to set the standard of excellence across the country. This recognition is a testament to both her commitment to our student-athletes and the team culture she continues to build, producing lasting results both on and off the court. We are incredibly proud of the success that both her and the program have achieved this season,” said Saskatchewan chief athletics officer Shannon Chinn.
