In the last quarterfinal, the top-seeded Mount Saint Vincent Mystics edged the 8th-seeded University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves 74-72. The Mystics trailed 17-14 after one quarter but led 40-25 at the half and 50-43 after three quarters. The Mystics moved into a 55-54 lead with about six minutes left in the fourth quarter on a three-ball by guard Stephen Morris. The teams went back and forth at each other from that point forward, and the Mystics were finally able to put down the T-wolves. The 73rd and decisive point came out of the hands of Ibrahaim Toulany with 27.4 seconds to play, from the foul line. The T-wolves were up 19-14 after the first quarter and 47-33 at halftime. Both teams put 22 points on the board in the third quarter. In the fourth, the Hawks made things interesting. With 1:39 to play, they got within three of the host team, down 80-77. Then, with 25.6 seconds left on the clock, Daviau Rodney of the Hawks hit one of two foul shots. But, as time ticked down, UNBC’s Paul Burkholder drained a couple free throws of his own and the T-wolves held on for the win. In the fourth quarter, they were outscored 23-13 by the Hawks. “They’re a great team,” Hawks head coach Darrell Glenn said of the T-wolves. “They move the ball well, they shoot the ball well. Stephen Morris notched 10 on 2-6 from the floor, 2-3 from the arc, 3 boards, 6
assists and 4 steals. Jason Carlson added 9 on 4-11 from the floor, 1-4 from
the line, 6 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals. Anthony Zinn added 7 on 3-6 from
the floor, 1-2 from the line and 4 boards. Carl Wickstrom added 4 and Sean Boulay
1, while Gary Gray, John Caulfield; Derico Symonds and Alex Hollett were
scoreless. The Mystics hit 24-54 (.440) from the floor, 5-14 (.360) from the
arc and 10-16 (.620) from the line, while garnering 47 boards, including 23 on
the offensive glass, 23 fouls, 20 assists, 11 turnovers and 10 steals.
In the bronze medal match, the
7th-seeded Algonquin Thunder clipped the 8th-seeded host University of Northern
British Columbia Timberwolves 116-105 before 2,000 frenzied fans at the Charles
Jago Northern Sport Centre. The Timberwolves outscored the Thunder 37-22 in the
final quarter. But, after giving up 94 points in the first three quarters and
scoring 68, they had to settle for fourth place in the eight-team tournament. “(The
Thunder) came out and they couldn’t miss,” said forward Paul Burkholder, who was
named UNBC’s player of the game. “It’s always tough to go up against a team that
shoots that well. We just didn’t really attack defensively. We could have got
up in their shooters a bit more and we could have showed the hustle and heart
we had in the second half, earlier, and it might have been a different outcome.”
Algonquin led 73-47 at the half. “We have a lot of shooters on the team, a lot
of people who can score,” said Charly Spurr. “When we get on a roll it can be
pretty scary. But, at the same time, we can be a very streaky team and you saw
the result. We were hot in the first half and we cooled off a bit and we had to
sustain our lead. Give (the Timberwolves) credit, they made quite a run. I’ve never
played in an environment like that in my life. I’ve never seen fans who get
behind a team like that and they really fed off their crowd.” UNBC coach Mike
Raimbault said that “we wanted to continue to get better and we wanted to play
our best basketball this weekend and I really feel, for the most part, that we
were able to do that. “We put our best foot forward and put our best product on
the floor all three days. There were a couple games we just weren’t able to get
it done but I couldn’t be more proud of these guys.” Charly Spurr paced Algonquin
with 30 on 6-12 from the floor, 5-8 from the arc, 3-4 from the line, 6 boards
and 2 steals. Anthony Hinds added 18 on 2-7 from the floor, 4-7 from the arc, 2-2
from the line and 4 boards. Abdul Kosar notched 18 on 6-11 from the arc. Denis
Dervisevic added 11 on 5-6 from the floor, 1-2 from the line and 7 boards.
Jordan Rose added 15 on 5-11 from the floor, 1-2 from the arc, 2-2 from the
line, 5 boards and 7 assists. Marlon Campbell scored 9 on 3-4 from the floor, 1-2
from the arc and 5 boards. Davidson Sanelus scored 9 on 4-7 from the floor, 1-2
from the line and 5 boards. Michael Savage added 4 and Patrick Lumumba 2, while
Christian Kanku, Njuguna Waiganio and Eddie Alculumbre were scoreless. The
Thunder hit 28-52 (.530) from the floor, 17-32 (.530) from the arc and 9-12 from
the line, while garnering 47 boards, including 22 on the offensive glass, 29 fouls,
22 assists, 17 turnovers, 1 block and 6 steals. Inderbir Singh Gill paced UNBC
with 30 on 5-14 from the floor, 3-6 from the arc, 11-11 from the line, 6 boards,
7 assists and 2 steals. Paul Burkholder added 15 on 5-9 from the floor, 5-6 from
the line, 7 boards and 2 steals. Jarett Borsoie scored 12 on 5-9 from the floor
and 2-3 from the line. Francis Rowe notched 11 on 1-4 from the floor, 2-3 from
the arc, 3-4 from the line and 6 assists. Dennis Stark scored 10 on 2-9 from
the floor, 6-9 from the line, 7 boards and 2 steals. Matt Mills added 9 on 3-7 from
the arc. Joel Rybachuk added 7 on 2-3 from the floor, 1-2 from the arc and 2
assists. Jessie Smith notched 6 on 2-2 from the arc. Swaroop Singh Clair added
4, while Paul Shmitke was scoreless. The Timberwolves hit 21-51 (.410) from the
floor, 12-23 from the arc and 27-35 (.770) from the line, while garnering 46 boards,
including 25 on the offensive glass, 19 fouls, 20 assists, 12 turnovers, 2
blocks and 10 steals.
In the final, the 2nd-seeded Mount
Royal Cougars defeated the 4th-seeded Champlain-St. Lambert Cavaliers 79-67.
Fifth year senior Craig Jantzen was elated. “It’s tough to put into words. It’s
a pretty euphoric feeling right now. I’m just feeling on top right now. We’ve
got a real deep team. It feels like we don’t really have any weaknesses. We can
bang with bigger teams, we can run with smaller teams. We just have so much
depth and versatility.” Those qualities gave the Cougars their national title
since 1979. At the beginning of this season, the current Cougars met with that collection
of champions from 30 years ago. “It was motivational to talk with them and hear
the stories of what they went through — how they came together and how they
won it,” said Jantzen, named a first-team tournament all-star after Sunday’s
game. “It’s good to draw on the experiences of guys who have done it before.”
The Cougars had a 39-35 advantage at halftime but turned the contest in the third
quarter, outscoring the Cavaliers 23-14. The Cavs did make some noise in the
fourth quarter but were hurt badly by a Stephen Trinidad three-pointer with 4:35
left on the clock. That bomb by the second-year guard pushed the Cougars into a
70-59 lead and then they scored the next three buckets as well to put the game
out of Champlain’s reach. The Cougars, champions in the Alberta Colleges
Athletic Conference, finished their season with an overall record of 38-3.
Cougars coach Marc Dobell said “They play a lot of zone defence which we don’t
see a whole lot of throughout the year. We managed to get them out of their
zone and into man defence, which was good for us and allowed us to run our offence
a little smoother. But to win a national championship, everybody’s got to play
well.” The Mount Royal bounced back from a 19-17 deficit after the first
quarter, taking a 39-35 lead at the half. “We’ve been in that situation lots
this year,” said Cam Dodd. “We realize every team is going to be good and going
to have their runs; we just had to stay together as a group. We always talk about
focusing on the process.” The Calgarians did that after the break, pushing
their lead to 62-49 after the third quarter. Cam Dodd paced Mount Royal with 27
on 4-8 from the floor, 3-5 from the arc, 7 boards and 2 assists. Stephen
Trinidad scored 17 on 3-4 from the floor, 3-6 from the arc, 2-2 from the line
and 3 boards. Jordan Hone scored 14 on 4-9 from the floor, 2-3 from the arc, 3
boards and 4 assists. Craig Jantzen scored 13 on 3-9 from the floor, 7-8 from
the line, 9 boards and 2 steals. Ian Tomaszeweski scored 6 on 2-5 from the
floor, 2-2 from the line, 3 boards and 3 assists. Brett Kobe scored 6 on 3-7
from the floor, 4 boards and 4 assists. Nick Wiebe scored 2 on 1-7 from the floor,
5 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals. Kendall Boese added 2 and Chris Armstrong 2,
while Trent Offereins, Adrian Krsulja and Nick Loewen were scoreless. The Cougars
hit 22-54 (.410) from the floor, 8-14 (.570) from the arc and 11-14 (.790) from
the line, while garnering 48 boards, including 19 on the offensive glass, 14 fouls,
18 assists, 16 turnovers, 4 blocks and 6 steals. Adam Chmielewski paced
Champlain-St. Lambert with 26 on 8-13 from the floor, 3-6 from the arc, 1-1
from the line and 2 boards. Niko Cochran added 11 on 2-16 from the floor, 4-9
from the arc, 6-6 from the line, 6 boards and 6 steals. Ibrahim Appiah added 9
on 3-8 from the floor, 3-4 from the line, 9 boards and 3 assists. Yann Charles
notched 8 on 4-8 from the floor and 8 boards. Tristan Renaud-Tremblay added 2
on 1-9 from the floor, 5 boards and 3 steals, while Jonathan Besserer-Lemay,
Azaria Estifanos, Bjorn Michaelsen, Shawn McAlphine-Talbot and Jean-Andrew
Moussignac were scoreless. The Cavaliers hit 18-58 (.310) from the floor, 7-17 (.410)
from the arc and 10-13 (.770) from the line, while garnering 46 boards, including
22 on the offensive glass, 17 fouls, 12 assists, 9 turnovers, 2 blocks and 11
steals.
