In the quarterfinals, held at Truro’s N.S. Agricultural College, the top-seeded Quebec champ Dawson Blues, coached by Varouj Gurunlian, thrashed the host and 8th-seeded Hawks, coached by Peter Caulfield, 96-72. Dexter John paced the Blues with 24.
The 4th-seeded B.C. champ Fraser Valley Cascades, coached by Tom Antil, defeated the 5th-seed N.S. champ Univ. of King’s College Blue Devils, coached by Geoff McIver, 74-69 despite trailing in the final minute of play. Player of the game Brian Phillip-Stewart led the Cascades with 20. Greg Margharitis added 19 and Steve Klassen 11, while dishing 6 assists.
The 3rd-seeded Alberta champ Grant MacEwan CC Griffins, coached by Ken Larson, defeated the Quebec runner-up and 6th-seed John Abbott Islanders, coached by Steve Seabrooke, by an 84-81 count. The Islanders led by 13 with 15 minutes to play but collapsed down the stretch. Leon Pierre paced the Islanders with 21. Marcello Biocchi added 18.
In the last quarterfinal, the 2nd-seeded Ontario champ Humber Hawks, coached by Mike Katz, defeated the Saskatchewan champ and 7th-seeded Canadian Bible Crusaders, coached by Don Jaspar, 81-70.
In the bronze quarterfinals, the King’s College Blue Devils defeated the Nova Scotia Teachers College Hawks 84-62.
In the other bronze quarterfinal, the John Abbott Islanders defeated the Canadian Bible College Crusaders 87-81. The score was knotted at 44 at the half. Alex Aviles paced the Islanders with 26. Marcello Biocchi added 16 and Donald Guy 15.
In the semis, the Dawson Blues defeated Fraser Valley 70-61 by outscoring the Cascades 13-4 in the final three minutes of play. Dexter John paced Dawson with 25. Game MVP Allen Cox added 19. Steve Klassen led the Cascades with 20. Brian Phillip-Stewart added 13 and Kirk Tyfting 12, while Mark Klassen dished 9 assists.
In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Humber Hawks defeated the Grant MacEwan Griffins 82-70 as George MacNeil scored 27.
In the bronze semis, the Grant MacEwan Griffins dispatched the King’s College Blue Devils 95-79.
In the other bronze semi, the Fraser Valley Cascades dumped the John Abbott Islanders 78-61 as player of the game Greg Margaritis scored 20, while nabbing 18 boards. “After we switched to man-to-man defence we felt more comfortable and led (68-65) before they scored seven in a row,” Islanders coach Steve Seabrooke told the Montreal Gazette. Abbott fell behind by 12 points in the first half as they unsuccessfully sought to play a zone. “We made some bad shot decisions late in the game,” Seabrooke said. Marcello Biocchi led the Islanders with 16. Donald added 14, Leon Pierre 11 and Alex Aviles 11.
In the bronze medal match, the Grant MacEwan Griffins defeated the Fraser Valley Cascades 83-67.
In the final, the Dawson Blues played cautious but consistent ball to dump the Humber Hawks 73-59 as tournament MVP Dexter John scored 25. The game got off to a sluggish start as both teams struggling with their marksmanship and appeared nervous. But Dawson rallied to a 37-28 lead at the half. Dawson coach Varouj Gurunlian, who’d announced in mid-season that he was retiring after the campaign, said his Blues defence on Hawks scoring machine George MacNeil was the difference. “Being smaller, we had to play a faster game but not a wilder game. I think we were better at running the offence until the good shots came. We keyed our defence towards MacNeil. We made him hurry his shots and kept him away from the ball as much as possible.” Dexter John notched 25 for the Blues. Michael Smith added 18 and Allan Cox 10.
