Our whole team trusts her and we’re just lucky to have someone with that skill and confidence on the team. … I think we haven’t had a crazy amount of super close games this year so I was a little nervous how we’d handle it. But I think we just did a good job of keeping our heads and then the girls executed what we needed them to do. … “That was something that we tried to encourage them with as motivation, that this could be the first time in history we win two in a row.” Crusaders coach Janaya Brown said her troops “didn’t let themselves get down even when there was a bit of a gap there. The Golden Suns led 27-12, 46-32 and 68-48 at the quarters. Golden Suns coach Garrett Kot told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that the win was “a little bit unexpected,” as star Nicola Meban missed the tournament while attending national tryouts. “We’re missing (Nicola) this weekend, but all the girls outplayed themselves and over-compensated for what we miss with that player not being here. “We had a very good season against Saskatchewan teams. We had a couple close games but we haven’t lost any. I kind of figured we’d be here. I just didn’t think we’d play as well without that starter.” Ardens coach Andrew Herrick said “I think it’s a big accomplishment. The 5A basketball scene, there’s some heavy hitters in Saskatoon and Regina. Even to make it to this game, to beat (Saskatoon) St. Joe’s (quarter-finals) and to beat (Regina) Winston Knoll (semifinals), those are tough teams. “Being from Swift Current and playing that rural basketball circuit, it’s a different level sometimes when you come and play those city teams. I thought our kids matched their intensity and they put a lot of time in. It doesn’t just happen overnight. They put a lot of hours in to get to that point so we’re just super proud that we got a chance to be in a game like that.” Hayden Kot led the Golden Suns with 22. Tatum Milligan added 21, Sasha Onion 14, Neko Michell 12, Lilianna Maclennan 9, Jasmeen Jain 2 and Kendall Hambleton 1, while Arrayah Singh, Kieran Milligan, Life Hambiyaremye, Nicola Meban, Buchi Odoh and Erin Dolan were scoreless.
