       In the opening round, the fourth-seeded Dalhousie Tigers slaughtered the fifth-seeded Bishop’s Gaiters 70-27 as Heather Shute scored 15, Joan Selig 14 and Rose Johnston 12. Sue Garand led the Gaiters with 12. Audry Jones added 10 and Mitch Skena 10. Gaiters stars Nancy Knowlton and Anne Williams did not play because of injury. Dalhousie coach Anthea Bellemare was displeased with the Tigerettes play in the first half. “You have 20 minutes to lose it or win. It’s up to you.” Dalhousie came out of the break and held the Gaiters to four points in the first eight minutes. “We shifted around to a pressing man-to-man,” Bellemare said. The Tigers led 28-27 at the half.

       In the semis, the Manitoba Bisons defeated the University of Western Mustangs 55-42 as Barb Hall scored 16 and Bernice Hall 14. The Mustangs were led by Beth Johnson 16 and Mary Reizebos 10.

       In the other semi, the top-seeded U.B.C. Thunderbirds defeated the 4th-seeded Dalhousie Tigers 67-39 as Wendy Grant scored 13, Joanne Sargeant 13 and Debbie Phelan 11. Rose Johnston scored 10 to lead the Tigers. Wendy Moore added 10, Helika Hudoffsky 8, Judy Rice 8, Louise MacDonald 2 and Judy Smith 1.

       In the consolation match, the University of Western Ontario Mustangs whipped the Bishop’s Gaiters 72-28 as Beth Johnston scored 18, Mary Riezebos 10 and Paula Chapman 10. Helen Castonguay led Bishop’s with 15. Sue Garand added 10.

       In the final, the U.B.C. Thunderbirds defeated the Manitoba Bisons 50-20 to win its second straight title as national team member Wendy Grant scored 17 and Bev Barnes 10. Manitoba was led by Karen Palmer’s 7 points. The Birds finished (24-1) on the season and boasted seven national team players, including four Olympians. Coach Norm Vickery told Canadian Press that it was his best team and most dedicated team. “We worked really hard and were not recognized at the time. We’re proud of what we did and pleased that the girls’ teams of today are getting the recognition they deserve,” said Jan Gee.
