SEASON WRAP
The season started ominously with all-star point guard Fred Van Vleet bailing for greener pastures and New York filing a lawsuit against the Raptors for allegedly hiring an ex-Knick employee/“mole” (a former video coordinator who newly-minted Raptors coach Darko Rajkovic had recruited) to pilfer confidential scouting secrets. It went downhill from there. Rookie coach Darko Rajakovic quickly demonstrated that he lacked confidence in most of the roster (and was evidently on his own steep learning curve as a head coach). General manager Masai Ujiri decided to blow up the roster, starting by trading the Raptors two best players, Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby. In short, the fire sale was on, as the Raptors signaled that they were starting from scratch and rebuilding around 2023 NBA rookie of the year Scottie Barnes, who promptly got injured, as did starting post Jakob Poeltl. What ensued was a near-record losing streak (15 games) and the worst loss ever (48 points). League stats indicated that the Raptors were the worst team in the league in March, par excellence. Words like unwatchable began being associated with the team, and then mid-season acquisition Jontay Porter was given a lifetime suspension by the NBA for betting on games, disclosing confidential information to bettors and taking himself out of a game to influence prop bets on his performance. Bluntly put, an altogether dismal campaign.
