Defensively and offensively, we try not to think about the scoreboard, or the bracket, or anything other than just trying to do our jobs each time we go up and down the floor. … Pitt Meadows was formidable, and that guard [Boyes] is a heck of a player. Leading 35-25, the Blue Jags notched a 14-0 run to take command. Blue Jags point guard Avery Geddes, a month returned from an UCL tear, dominated the floor. Blue Jags coach Lindsay Brooke told Varsity Letters that “definitely having her and having her fully up to speed is so big. She does a little of everything for us – shooter, ball handler, just kind of a floor general – and we’re lucky she had the chance to come back over the past month and get back to game speed. … Full credit to LFA – they were scrappy and physical against us. They did a nice job with a 2-3 zone, and we kind of struggled early to shoot the ball. We got it going a bit in the second quarter, but really relied on our defense and our press to get it going fully in the second half. I was happy overall – there was some nerves, jitters, but overall, it was a good effort.” Avery Geddes led the Blue Jags with 20. Alex Motherwell added 14, Charlie Anderson 12, Olivia Pickering 7, Maddy Albert 6, Olivia Vincent 5, Mya Beare 2 and Joss Olcen 1, while Sophia Eiley, Cate Pontefract and Indigo Edgington were scoreless. The Eagles front-line of Bella Graves, Skyler Lubben and Saige Parfitt dominated the glass and scored all the points in a decisive 11-2 run after the Eagles had rallied within 58-54. “We work incredibly hard in the paint,” Reynolds coach Kim Graves told Varsity Letters. “We rebound with tenacity. We put our bodies on the line. It’s so tough guard when you have two posts who play so well with each other. … MEI is an incredible team but we match up with them well size-wise. But speed-wise with Sidhu, we had to make adjustments. We said to her check ‘Don’t rebound, just stop the release in the full court on her because that is her bread-and-butter’. We did a good job playing smart defence and it paid off.” Bella Graves led the Roadrunners with 27. Skyler Lubben added 20, Saige Parfitt 15, Leah Parsons 4, Amelia Aris 3 and Ava White 2, while Sadie Bull, Camille Astridge and Bianca Nixdorf were scoreless. Titans coach Del Komarniski said Feron Wallace’s defence on Wildcat post Mirella Fernandes Boshell, and offensive punch, were critical to victory. “Feron’s become a big part of the group. She’s been an under-ager with us the last two years and this year, she slid into a starting role. I anticipated this happening for her. …I like where we’re at. We have been playing good basketball the last month of season. They have rounded into form. We are playing hard and that is the most important thing.” Feron Wallace paced the Titans with 23. Lucy Marchese added 21, Kiana Kaczur 13, Kylee Koppes 4, Callie Veller 3, Kiera McIntosh 2, Bella Maraca 2 and Amarah Mahal 2, while Morgan Ring and Kali McDermott were scoreless. Blue Jags coach Lindsay Brooke said a mid-season injury to point guard Avery Geddes forced others on the team to elevate their games. “One hundred per cent Alex (Motherwell) is critical to us and the team really did a phenomenal job when Avery was out. We really didn’t miss a beat and that is huge. It was great experience that other players had to step up and while you never want to lose anyone, it is beneficial if everyone can step up and play a different role. … When you look at Alex, Avery and Charlie, we rely on them to do everything. They are our best defenders, our scorers, and they all have a piece of that. They know each other and play off each other very well.” Alex Motherwell and Charlie Anderson each scored 15 to pace the Blue Jags. Avery Geddes added 9, Olivia Vincent 9, Maddy Albert 8, Indigo Edgington 6, Sophia Eiley 2 and Cate Pontefract 2, while Joss Olcen and Mya Beare were scoreless. In the last quarterfinal, the top-seeded Langley Brookswood Bobcats spanked the 8th-seeded Prince George College Heights Cougars 74-36 after leading 25-8, 50-16 and 67-27 at the quarters. After missing her first four shots, grade 9 guard Jordyn Nohr hit 9 of her next 11 in the romp. Nohr told Varsity Letters that “it’s not caring whether the ball goes in our not, just shooting and it will happen.” Bobcats coach Chrissy Nohr said “Jordyn is pretty good at knowing good shots from bad shots and she is not going to turn down a (good) shot. I never have to worry about that with her.” Jordyn Nohr paced the Bobcats with 25. Bryn Symons added 13, Emma Lehnhoff 11, Ashley Vande Ven 7, Hazel Phillips 4, Mac Pogue 4, Nicole Taylor 4, Kaia Hutton 3 and Hannah Easton 2, while Emma Chorney and Cally Taylor were scoreless. In the semis, the 2nd-seeded Victoria St. Michael’s University Blue Jags nipped the 3rd-seeded South Kamloops Titans 55-54 as Charlie Anderson hit the winning free throw with 1.7 seconds to play after being fouled on a drive to the bucket. She missed the first free throw but took a deep breath and nailed the second. The Blue Jags led 14-12, 32-24 and 46-42 at the quarters. Blue Jags coach Lindsay Brooke told Varsity Letters that “we only had six seconds, and I feel like we were attacking the rim decently well … we weren’t finishing our layups. With that little time left, that is a play we have in our back pocket and we executed really well. It was for Charlie to turn-and-burn on the corner there.” Feron Wallace had given the Titans a 54-53 lead on a putback with 51 seconds to play. Anderson tied it at 54 by hitting 1-2 from the line, setting the stage for her final heroics. Titans coach Del Komarniski said “what a game. … They came out really aggressive, really physical, and played really hard. We were back on our heels for a while. We got squared away. We battled back. I couldn’t be prouder of a group of kids. And hats off to them. It was a well-played game.” Brooke said Alex Motherwell was exceptional. “Alex is awesome. She is so tough. She rises to the occasion. She is a big time player and today is a perfect example. I didn’t sub her once. I couldn’t. We were in major foul trouble with everyone but her so she had to play the whole game, and there she is at the end of the game full-court pressing … making things happen. … Obviously South Kam, they are such a strong team. They never gave up. They are really well-coached, disciplined. Tough defence. We knew it was going to be a battle. We obviously have a history with them at this tournament in particular, and that is just exciting stuff.” Charlie Anderson paced the Blue Jags with 21. Ashley Geddes added 20, Alex Motherwell 10, Maddy Albert 2 and Olivia Vincent 2, while Sophia Eiley, Cate Pontefract, Joss Olcen, Olivia Pickering, Mya Beare and Indigo Edgington were scoreless. The Bobcats led by as many as 37 and hit 14 treys, with 7 different players hitting from beyond the arc. Bobcats coach Chrissy Nohr said her troops hoisted thousands of shots in practice. “We train pretty hard. Lots of girls are in early in the morning, shooting extra shots. We’ve really focused on skills this year, so (opposing teams) can’t just take away one kid on our team. It’s just not going to work anymore. Everyone’s contributing, and we’re really hard to stop now. If they want to double- or triple-team Jordyn (Nohr), then let’s make them pay. The girls on our team have taken that quite personally, like, ‘We’re going to get better, and we’re going to be able to score, too.’ They’ve done a great job this year.” Jordyn Nohr paced the Bobcats with 20. Hazel Phillips added 16, along with 10 boards, Bryn Symons 9, Emma Lehnhoff 7, Hannah Easton 7, Ashley Vande Ven 4, Kaia Hutton 3, Cally Taylor 3, Emma Chorney 2 and Mac Pogue 2, while Nicole Taylor was scoreless. The Blue Jags broke to an 8-2 lead but the Bobcats countered with a 15-0 run and took a 21-12 lead after one quarter. The Blue Jags dominated the second frame by a 19-2 count to take a 35-23 lead at the half. Bobcats coach Chrissy Nohr told Varsity Letters that she instructed her troops at the half that “we need to score. We need to get a stop. We need to score. We need to get a stop.” The Bobcats erased the half-time deficit with an early 11-2 run. The Bobcats led 44-41 after three quarters. Ashley Vende Ven hit a layup with 7.9 seconds to play to give the Bobcats a late lead but Blue Jag answered with a pair of free throws from Alex Motherwell with 5.3 seconds to play to force overtime. In the extra session, Jordyn Nohr opened the overtime by delivering a behind the back pass to a cutting Bryn Symons for an easy layup. “I was going up (the court) and really wanted to do it and I saw the opportunity and I was really hoping that she’d make the lay up,” Nohr said. “I’ve done it a few times before and it’s one of my favourites because it makes the fans go crazy. … We couldn’t let them like get the momentum in the start. We needed it to bring it up at the start.” The Bobcats held the Blue Jags without a field goal in the extra session. Ashley Vande Ven paced the Bobcats with 22, while nabbing 24 boards and blocking 9 shots. Bobcats coach Chrissy Nohr said Vande Ven’s presence “was huge for us today. Her job was to stay in the key. She was not to leave the key and that is what she did today.” Blue Jags coach Lindsay Brooke said “It’s her length. She is so smart for a Grade 9 kid. They did a lot of nice action against us to get easy baskets. She finishes. She changed a lot of shots and she had a ton of blocks.” Chrissy Nohr added that the entire squad stepped up. “It was like when Jordyn was getting double-teammed, it’s all the other girls that are contributing. We had so many kids score tonight and that was really good.” Jordyn Nohr added 20 for the Bobcats, Bryn Symons 17, Emma Lehnoff 6, and Hannah Easton 4, while Kaia Hutton, Emma Chorney, Mac Pogue, Cally Taylor, Hazel Phillips and Nicole Taylor were scoreless.
