       In the quarterfinals, held in Edmonton, the top-seeded Saskatchewan Huskies clocked the 8th-seeded Calgary Dinos 85-54. Huskies coach Lisa Thomaidis said “I was really proud of our defence, the first half was just a stifling effort from us. They weren’t able to get going, and we were able to get some easy layups off some steals.” The Huskies ripped off a late 11-1 run to take a 19-9 lead after one quarter. They held Calgary scoreless for 7.5 minutes in the second quarter as they extended their lead to 41-16 at the half. The Huskies led 68-50 after three quarters. Thomaidis said “Gage [Grassick) has has been a difference maker for us. She has stepped up all season long. She really is the engine that drives our team, and you could see that tonight.” The Huskies led x-x after three quarters. Grassick was chosen player of the game for the Huskies, while Mya Proctor earned the laurels for the Dinos.        The 5th-seeded Laval Rouge et Or clipped the 5th-seeded host Alberta Pandas 65-57. “A couple keys stops for us tonight were huge. Our team really fought hard. We knew the Pandas would be well-prepared,” said Rouge et Or coach Guillaume Giroux. “Not a cute game, but a really hard-fought battle between two very good basketball teams. … In front of their loud crowd, we had to battle more for each possession. We knew this win would be tough, especially in front of the hostile crowd. But I’m proud of the girls for how they fought.” The Pandas broke to a 10-3 lead as Claire Signatovich dominated the paint. But the Rouge et Or countered with a 12-7 run to draw within 17-15 after one quarter. Laval closed the second frame with a 12-3 run to take a 31-30 lead into the lockers. Laval opened the second half with an 8-2 run the Pandas countered with a late 12-4 run to draw within 49-44 after three quarters. Reece Hall hit a trey to draw the Pandas within two with 4 minutes to play but Alberta missed five straight free throws before Lea-Sophie Verret iced it with a critical and-one layup with a minute to play. Verret was chosen player of the game for the Rouge et Or, while Jayden Tanner earned the laurels for the Pandas.        The 2nd-seeded Carleton Ravens dusted the 7th-seeded Fraser Valley Cascades 75-58. “We shot the ball really well to start the game, and we knew they would make some adjustments to take that away,” said Ravens coach Dani Sinclair. “They had a great game plan, but I thought our defence in the end, especially in the third and fourth quarter helped us get some easy baskets.” Sinclair added that there’s isn’t another play but Kali Pocrnic “in the country I would want leading our team. She’s understated and underrated, because she doesn’t demand a lot of attention. She doesn’t need to take shots; she just wants the team to win.” The Ravens led 19-16 after one quarter as Jacqueline Urban dominated the blocks. But the Cascades notched a 10-2 run to draw within 37-31 at the half. The Ravens broke it open with a 12-2 run early in the third quarter and led 59-43 heading into the final frame. Cascades coach Al Tuchscherer said “I think early in the game you could see that Carleton is the more experienced team. They came out of the gates pretty hard against us and I think the difference in experience showed there, but I was happy with our response. We really stood our ground in the second quarter and made a game of it. They just made more shots than us down the stretch.” Kali Pocrnic was chosen player of the game for the Ravens, while Julia Tuchscherer earned the laurels for the Cascades.        In the last quarterfinal, the 6th-seeded Queen’s Gaels stunned the 3rd-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies 69-54. Gaels coach Claire Meadows said Julia Chadwick delivered “an incredible performance. She has done that all season for us. She has been an absolute monster for us on the boards, and for her to do that [a massive double-double] in the first game of nationals is pretty impressive.” The Huskies led 7-2 early but the Gaels rallied to a 13-12 lead after one quarter and led 35-30 at the half. The Gaels notched a late 14-2 run, capped by an Emma Weltz trey at the buzzer, to take a 54-43 lead after three quarters. Weltz was chosen player of the game for the Gaels, while Lucina Beuamont earned the laurels for the Huskies. Julia Chadwick paced the Gaels with 25 on 11-22 from the floor, 0-2 from the arc, 3-7 from the line, 27 boards, 3 assists and 3 steals.        In the semis, the top-seeded Saskatchewan Huskies topped the 4th-seeded Laval Rouge et Or 64-57 as Crly Ahlstrom lit up the nets for 27. “She can really shoot the ball,” said Huskies coach Lisa Thomaidis. “She is such a competitor; she doesn’t shy away from big moments, and it showed again tonight.” Laval broke to a 16-2 lead on the perimeter shooting of Lea-Sophie Verret but Logan Reider notched a pair of treys to draw the Huskies within 22-15 after one quarter. The Huskies opened the second frame with a 7-0 run as they rallied to a 32-30 lead at the half. Despite a late 6-0 Laval run, the Huskies extended the margin to 51-47 after three quarters. Ahlstrom played a role in the Huskies first three buckets of the final frame as Saskatchewan moved ahead by seven and held off the Rouge et Or as Gage Grassick converted free throws down the stretch. Thomaidis said the Rouge et Or presented a major challenge. “We knew they could shoot the ball, but until you are out there and can see how deep they can shoot it and how quick they can get it off. But I am really proud of how we battled back and took the lead going into half. I think that was huge, it just settled us down.” Carly Ahlstrom paced the Huskies with 27 on 9-20 from the floor, 4-13 from the arc, 5-6 from the line, 5 boards and 2 steals.        In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Carleton Ravens torched the 6th-seeded Queen’s Gaels 74-40 after leading 23-14, 44-25 and 65-35 at the quarters. “From the start of the game, we have a consistency and focus on the defensive end,” said Carleton coach Dani Sinclair. “They had a few good looks early, but about four minutes in we got on the same page defensively, and carried that through the rest of the game. … We talk all the moving the ball, because we want to use our spacing to be able to find multiple options. Poulin is our anchor on the defensive end, but tonight she was aggressive on offence too.” Kyana-Jane Poulin was chosen player of the game for the Ravens, while Julia Chadwick earned the laurels for the Gaels.        In the bronze medal match, the 4th-seeded Laval Rouge et Or dusted the 6th-seeded Queen’s Gaels 76-62. “We shot the ball well today, like we did all year, so that helped us a lot. Defensively we were missing two starters, so I was really impressed with our bench giving us really good minutes,” said Laval coach Guillaume Giroux. “As a young team, we need this kind of experience. We aim to come back and win a medal of a different colour next year.” The Gaels led 11-2 early but the Rouge et Or stormed back with a 11-0 run to take an 18-17 lead after one quarter. The Rouge et Or notched a 12-0 run in the second frame as their depth began to wear down the Gaels. They led 41-24 at the break. The Gaels ripped off an 8-2 run in the third quarter but the Rouge et Or regained their poise and took a 59-42 lead heading into the final frame. The Gaels no closer than 8.        In the final, the 2nd-seeded Carleton Ravens captured their second consecutive title by edging the top-seeded Saskatchewan Huskies 70-67. The Ravens held the Huskies to just 9 points in the final quarter and just 2 over the final 1:25. “That game could’ve gone either way. So much respect for the Huskies program,” said Ravens coach Dani Sinclair. “We played some tough teams in the OUA, but that was a tough group to play against. … We base ourselves on our defence. We were a bit scattered early on. Gage was terrific for them. But the final three minutes we really settled in, focused on our rotations, and needed to play lockdown defence. Carleton led 19-14 after one quarter on four free throws from Dorcas Buisa. The Ravens expanded their lead to 8 but the Huskies rallied to with 39-37 at the half. Saskatchewan led 58-54 after three quarters. Five straight points from tournament MVP Kali Pocrnic gave Carleton a three-point lead with two minutes to play. She added a spinning turnaround jumper to make it 68-63. Gage Grassick countered with a steal for a runout but Tatyanna Burke notched a putback with 40 seconds to play. Ella Murphy Wiebe trimmed the margin to three with a layup with 11 seconds to play. The Huskies forced a turnover but a Logan Reider misfired on a trey as the clock expired. Tatyanna Burke was chosen player of the game for the Ravens, while Gage Grassick earned the laurels for the Huskies.
