In the quarterfinals, the 4th-seeded Cape Breton Capers defeated the 5th-seeded New Brunswick Varsity Reds 95-89 in overtime. The Varsity Reds led 32-23 after one quarter as Marcus Barnes lit up the Capers with a trio from beyond the arc, and 50-38 at the half. The score was knotted at 62 after three quarters on a late jumper by Justus Pueser, and at 81 after regulation as Chris Ruta notched a bucket with four seconds to play. Player of the game Osman Omar notched the go-ahead jumper in overtime as momentum shifted toward the Capers. Varsity Reds coach Joe Salerno said “I told our guys I was proud of their effort today. It was a good basketball game. It was unfortunate to cough up a lead like we did, I thought turnovers killed us in the second half, but we have a lot of young guys who stepped up today and played in their first big post-season game, so I was proud of their effort.” Red rookie Marcus Barnes said “we played great but it was a tough loss, we just ran out of gas in the end. Player of the game Dondre Reddick said “I think it was a statement win, we played great defensively and that’s our culture, defense, once we play defense like that then the points are going to start to come.” X-Men coach Tyrell Vernon said “we did a great job with our energy, it was our first game and I knew our nerves were going to get the best of us for the first five minutes. I just didn’t know there was going to be that many fouls in the first five minutes, but we weathered the storm in the first half and stayed out of foul trouble in the second half. We did a good job settling in as the game went on.” Dondre Reddick paced the X-Men with 25 on 11-14 from the floor, 2-2 from the arc, 1-2 from the line and 7 boards. In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded U.P.E.I. Panthers clipped the 3rd-seeded Dalhousie Tigers 80-65 after leading 15-14, 36-35 and 66-48 at the quarters. The Tigers had no answer for AUS player of the year Elijah Miller. “I’m just being patient and letting the game come to me,” Miller said. “Last year, I kind of forced it a little bit, but having my teammates score early helped open things up for myself.” Panthers coach Darrell Glenn said “they’re a championship program and no lead is secure against them. It was a tough first half. I know we had the lead, but we weren’t playing as well as we wanted to. But we stuck it out and I’m proud of our perseverance.” Miller hit back-to-back treys to give the Panthers a 36-25 lead but the Tigers stormed back with a 10-0 run to draw within one at the half. But Miller scored 10 straight points on an array of long range shots and attacks at the rim before Dakelle Brooks drilled a trey to cap a 13-0 run that gave the Panthers a 54-40 lead. The X-men opened with a 7-0 run featuring an Avan Nava trey, and were never threatened. They thoroughly dominated the paint, ripped off a 12-0 run and then another 7-0 run to start the second half and coasted to the easy win. X-Men coach Tyrell Vernon said his troops did a “great job of buying into the scout. Everything that we wrote on that paper those guys tried their best to do. They really bought into the ‘KYP’ – knowing your personnel, and how we were going to defend, who we were going to make shoot, who’s going to beat us, who’s not going to beat us, and we stuck to the game plan.” Avan Nava paced the X-Men with 16 on 6-7 from the floor, 3-4 from the arc, 1-1 from the line and 3 assists.
