The start in the first half put us in a good position to get the win. I thought Waterloo did a really good job pressuring us and taking us out of rhythm. I thought at moments we got outside ourselves and that got us in trouble. But in terms of what we’re going to see moving forward, that’s exactly it. So this is great preparation.” Laura Donovan said she and Emma Weltz “have been here at Queen’s for five years. We’ve never, as a pair, made it past the quarterfinals. But I’m proud of our girls for coming together, especially in the fourth quarter when the game had gotten tight.” Sinclair added that Kyana Poulin “did an incredible job” on Marauders star Sarah Gates. “I thought using her length and not making it easy for her to get catches and go downhill. … We ask them to play with lots of emotion, togetherness and talk on defence – and play with pace offensively. We try to create some easy scores by getting stops.” Kali Pocrnic paced the Ravens with 21 on 7-20 from the floor, 0-4 from the arc, 7-8 from the line, 4 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals. In the final, the 2nd-seeded Carleton Ravens toppled the top-seeded host Queen’s Gaels 70-57. The Gaels led 13-10 after one quarter. The Ravens led 28-27 at the half and 51-43 after three quarters. Ravens coach Dani Sinclair said “I’m very proud for this group, how they’ve come together – especially in the second half of the season. They showed a lot of toughness tonight going into a great atmosphere that was loud, with a full crowd against you, and they just stayed together. … I think we did some very good things defensively right from the very beginning, defensively we got some good stops, we just couldn’t put the ball in the basket. … That’s a first time atmosphere for most of our players to be in that game, so all though we weren’t putting points on the board I thought early in the game we established ourselves defensively. … Kali (Pocrnic) took a third foul and it wasn’t ideal, but it kind of woke some people up. Teresa (Donato) came in off the bench and got some huge baskets for us turning it on offensively.” Sinclair added that Dorcas Buisa “takes a load off when there’s a lot of attention on Kali. When you have Dorcas playing aggressive like that at the offensive end of the floor – when she already brings so much to the table for us as a leader and a defender – it’s exciting.” Gael Laura Donovan said “it was a tough game, but a great environment. We play not just for ourselves, but for the Kingston community. After the season, Algoma coach Ryan Vetrie, who’d also been at the helm of the men’s program since midway through the season, stepped aside to assume permanent duties with the male Thunderbirds. Early in the season, Lakehead parts ways with coach Jon Kreiner after 18 years at the helm amid player allegations of maltreatment, including verbal abuse, breaking clipboards and kicking basketballs at players. The university also launched an investigation alleging that Kreiner had pilfered thousands of dollars over a decade from the university’s work-study program for players. In a statement, Kreiner said “I confirm that I am no longer the head coach of the women’s basketball team at Lakehead University. A decision was made to part ways, and I cannot discuss the details. … I stand by my record and my professional conduct. I won’t be commenting any further.” Kreiner was replaced on an interim basis by assistant David McCallum. After the season, Lakehead appointed Laval assistant Hugo Boisvert to the helm.
