In the opening play-in round, held in Edmonton, the 5th-seeded University of British Columbia Thunderbirds dispatched the Mount Royal Cougars after leading 30-19, 52-42 and 82-62 at the quarters. The T-Birds took command quickly as Luka Lizdek and Tobi Akinkunmi lit up the scoreboards, while Keivonte Watts kept the Cougars vaguely with reach by hitting four treys. U.B.C. led by as many as 20. Thunderbirds coach Kevin Hanson said “we really rallied together. Our energy today was good defensively and offensively we set the tone in the first quarter. … Tobi Akinkunmi had a great game. He did good things at both ends of the floor and sparked us with his energy and one of his best games that he’s played for us. Then it was huge for us to have Brian Wallack back. The Bobcats took command with a 21-2 run the first quarter and notched a season high 22 treys. The Cascades rallied with 88-85 down the stretch but Brandon iced the win with a late 10-2 run. Cascades coach Joe Enevoldson said “the start officially was our end. We were the better team for 25 minutes, but that start was something else. … Kudos to our character and resolve to cut it back down to three, but we kind of took our foot off the gas and played them even the rest of the way. The Cougars capitalized on foul trouble from the Timberwolves bigs as they built a double-digit lead at the half. Regina iced the win with three consecutive treys in the final frame, from Carter Millar, Nick Barnard and Brayden Kuski, on consecutive possessions. Cougars coach Steve Burrows said “we knew it was going to be a battle, especially playing in a neutral venue. I thought it was going to be a close-contested battle, and it was.” Timberwolves coach Todd Jordan said “it was tough, and we were short-manned having only eight guys healthy and going tonight. We dug ourselves in a little bit of hole early. They gave us some trouble on the offensive glass in the first half. In the last play-in game, held in Winnipeg, the 10th-seeded Calgary Dinos stunned the 7th-seeded Trinity Western Spartans 78-72 after leading 9-8, 38-25 and 50-46 at the quarters. Dinos coach Dan Vanhooren said the key to the victory was containing Spartans Mason Bourcier. “Well, he dropped 41 on us last year, so it was a major part of our game plan to contain him.” Spartans coach Trevor Pridie said “the guys played great and really battled. Calgary is a very talented team and we came out of the gate and couldn’t find an offensive rhythm and dug ourselves into a hole. We got good looks but they just weren’t dropping early. Defensively we were great and I’m so proud of the effort. We have such a great group of guys and I love battling with them. Obviously, we’re disappointed going out early. I wanted so much more for these guys. In the quarterfinals, the 5th-seeded U.B.C. Thunderbirds clipped the 4th-seeded Alberta Golden Bears 76-65 after leading 21-19, 40-38 and 59-49 at the quarters. U.B.C. hit a quartet from beyond the arc as they broke to an early lead. Adam Paige nailed a trey to give Alberta a 38-37 lead but Jack Cruz-Dumont responded with a buzzer-beating bomb to give the Thunderbirds a two-point lead into the lockers. The Thunderbirds locked down on defence as they took command in the third quarter and all but iced it with a 6-0 run to open the final frame. The Thunderbirds led by as many as 15. Thunderbird Brian Wallack told Canada West TV that “Alberta is a good team. We knew we had to bring our best. Our team played exceptional and I’m really proud of our guys.” UBC coach Kevin Hanson said “our entire group played so tough defensively. Offensively, we created some tough matchups on them and got them in foul trouble in the first half. Then to hold them to 27 points in the second half was a pretty special effort. … Brian [Wallack] loves the game so much. He came out and played physical, and didn’t play scared. For a guy to step up the way he did, he set the tone for us. The 3rd-seeded Winnipeg Wesmen outlasted the Brandon Bobcats 87-84 in triple-overtime as Donald Stewart nailed a trey with 0.1 seconds to play. The Wesmen led 16-11 after one quarter and 34-33 at the half. The Bobcats led 52-47 after three quarters. The score was knotted at 62 after regulation, at 70 after the first overtime and at 79 after the second extra session. Anthony Tsegakele had drilled a contested trey to force the second overtime. The Wesmen’s Shawn Maranan had drained a trey with 13 seconds to play to force the third overtime. The 2nd-seeded Manitoba Bisons edged the 10th-seeded Calgary Dinos 75-72. The Dinos led 18-10 after one quarter. But the Bisons kept crashing the offensive glass and led 34-29 at the half and 57-46 after three quarters. Manitoba led by as many as 18 after Tito Obasito notched a pair of treys during an 8-0 run. Calgary rallied to within one but Simon Hildebrandt and Isaac Miller-Jose iced the win with flawless shooting from the free throw line down the stretch. “This team is all about group effort, rebounding, points scored, assists, they come from everybody. In the last quarterfinal, the top-seeded Victoria Vikes dispatched the 8th-seeded Regina Cougars 88-70 with a dominant fourth quarter performance. The Cougars led 15-14 after one quarter. The score was knotted at 33 at the half. The Cougars opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run, including a pair of treys from Carter Millar, but the Vikes rallied with a late 1-2 run and took a 55-52 lead after three quarters in a trey by Diego Maffia. In the semis, the top-seeded Victoria Vikes dispatched the 5th-seeded U.B.C. Thunderbirds 91-83. The Vikes opened with an 11-0 run, holding U.B.C. scoreless for nearly four minutes before the Thunderbirds responded with a 6-0 run to draw within 17-15 after one quarter. The Thunderbirds took their first lead with an 8-0 run in the second quarter but Jaden Touchie notched a trey and three free throws and Ethan Boag a late trey to knot the score at 43 at the half. U.B.C. took a 63-57 lead in the third frame before Renoldo Robinson notched a late layup and a dunk to give the Vikes a 69-65 lead after three quarters. They then staved off the Birds in the final frame. “It was a game of possessions,” said Vikes coach Craig Beaucamp. “We were beat in the first half, but we got after it in the second half, competed, and had guys step up and make big plays for us.” Thunderbirds coach Kevin Hanson said “I think we certainly had what’s considered ‘playoff basketball,’ you couldn’t ask for much more than that. In the other semi, the 3rd-seeded Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the 2nd-seeded Manitoba Bisons 73-70. The Wesmen led 19-15 after one quarter. The score was knotted at 39 at the half. The Wesmen led 59-51 after three quarters. With the score knotted at 66, Alberto Gordo notched a pair of treys on back-to-back Winnipeg possessions, the latter with just a second remaining on the shot clock. Manitoba rallied with a pair of free throws from Simon Hildebrandt and a layup by Wyatt Tait. The Wesmen led 72-70 with 23 seconds to play when Tait missed a runner but notched the rebound. His putback was blocked by Ryan Luke and the Wesmen notched a free throw. With five seconds to play, Bison guard Elijah Lostracco’s trey fell short at the buzzer. Gordo said of his trey against the expiring shot clock that “it was just a shot that we had to get up. With all the practice that I’ve done to get to this moment all throughout the year, and at the end of the day it’s just a matter of getting your shots up. … It’s not really about luck. It’s all the practice that’s behind every shot. I’m really happy that it went in. In the final, the top-seeded Victoria Vikes earned their second consecutive Canada West title by clipping the 3rd-seeded Winnipeg Wesmen 95-80 after leading 29-18, 48-39 and 75-61 at the quarters. The Vikings notched a 5-0 run off a Diego Maffia trey and then held Winnipeg scoreless for the remainder of the first quarter. Winnipeg rallied with a 6-0 run to draw within 37-30 but the Vikes rebuilt a nine-point lead at the half. The Vikes notched three consecutive treys to close out the third quarter as they took command. They iced it with an 11-3 run in the final frame. Vikes coach Craig Beaucamp said “Winnipeg is a really tough team and answered us punch-for-punch over the first three quarters. I thought we were pretty resilient and kept playing at the same rate the whole way through. We got a couple stops in the second that really led to the separation. Winning is hard, and repeating [as conference champions] is very, very hard. I’m really proud of the guys and happy for them.” Wesmen coach Mike Raimbault said “we have a great young group. After the season, Thompson Rivers coach Scott Clark steps aside after 13 years at the helm to assume the role of manager, high performance sport, with the Wolfpack. He previously served as head coach at Simon Fraser University between 1995 and 2010. Clark was replaced by Saskatchewan assistant Chad Jacobson. He was the lead assistant for the Huskies since 2015 and acting head coach for a few months in 2022, leading the Huskies to a silver medal at nationals. “I am very grateful and truly honoured to have been given the opportunity to join WolfPack Athletics and Thompson Rivers University,” said Jacobson. “I am so thankful to the WolfPack leadership team for believing in me and providing me the opportunity to lead and continue to build upon the strong foundation and past success of the program. I am looking forward to getting the chance to work with our student-athletes, WolfPack athletics staff, and the Thompson Rivers University community.” Jacobson also previously served as coach Brandon T.A. Neelin high school, spent a year as an assistant with Brandon and served as both both head and assistant coach of the Saskatchewan Rattlers in the Canadian Elite Basketball League. He played three years for Minot State University before returning to Brandon to toil for the Bobcats, where he helped them to a runner-up finish at the CIS National Championship and was named the university’s male athlete of the year in 2007.
