At the start of the season, Kevin Duffie resigned as Acadia coach after seven years at the helm to pursue a career in business. He was replaced on an interim basis by Mike Leslie, who coached the National Basketball League’s Halifax Hurricanes, before moving to their front office as president and general manager. After the season, he was appointed the permanent head coach.
In the quarterfinals, the top-seeded Dalhousie Tigers torched the 8th-seeded Acadia Axemen 86-69 after leading 15-14, 34-31 and 61-48 at the quarters. Keevan Veinot was chosen player of the game for the Tigers, while Thomas MacDonald earned the laurels for the Axemen. The 2nd-seeded St. Francis Xavier X-Men dusted the 7th-seeded New Brunswick Varsity Reds 94-76 after leading 17-16, 45-38 and 71-55 at the quarters. The X-Men notched a 6-0 run in the first quarter as Jamie White hit a bucket and a pair of layups. The X-Men extended their lead to 45-38 at the half on a late trey by Avan Nava. Although the Varsity Reds opened the 7-0 run, the X-Men promptly scored 16 unanswered to take total command. X-Men coach Tyrell Vernon said “I think the defensive energy was there. We needed to get stops in order to get out and run. It’s one thing to say run but it doesn’t work that way, you need to get the stops first and then you can run. I thought the guys did a great job in the second half, making things tough, shooting over top of people, and that’s what we’re going to have to do to win this.” Varsity Red Chris Spurrell said “it was defensive lapses. 45-38, I think it was at halftime, but it felt more like it was a defensive game in the first place and we basically let them run all over us the last two or three minutes of the first half and same thing in the second half.” Varsity Reds coach Joe Salerno said “we got out-played tonight, we got out-played. I thought we got out-coached tonight. … The second half just kind of got away from us. … They’ve got a couple of very good players, in Nava and Andrews, and those guys hit shots when it mattered. They were able to string possessions together, and their ability to switch defensively on us and have the athletes and physicality to be able to do that really took us out of the loop tonight.” Justin Andrew was chosen player of the game for the X-Men, while Ibrahima Doumbouya earned the laurels for the Varsity Reds. The 5th-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks dispatched the 4th-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies 95-89. The Sea-Hawks led 26-23 after one quarter. The Huskies led 48-43 after three quarters and 71-66 after three quarters. The Huskies took a five-point lead at the half on a steal and a slam by Nikita Kasongo. Memorial opened the second half with a 6-0 run and the teams kept trading the lead (five times in the final quarter) before the Sea-Hawks ripped off another 6-0 run and then extended their lead to 11 on a trey by Cole Long. A pair of Johneil Johnson treys cut the lead to 90-87 but the Sea-Hawks iced it at the line down the stretch. Boris Ristanovic was chosen player of the game for the Sea-Hawks, while Johneil Johnson earned the laurels for the Huskies. In the last quarterfinal, the 3rd-seeded University of Prince Edward Island Panthers dispatched the 6th-seeded Cape Breton Capers 95-80 after leading 22-16, 55-28 and 73-50 at the quarters. The Panthers essentially took command with a 14-0 run in the second quarter. Panthers coach Darrell Glenn said “I thought Elijah (Miller) was special tonight, especially in the first half where he set the table for us offensively. When he gets it going, it makes it easier for everyone else because the defence is so focused on him.” Miller said he “took it to heart” that Caper Osman Omar was chosen the league’s player of the year. “I thought I was just as deserving. … When the game started, I just wanted to prove them wrong.” Glenn said the Panthers game plan on Omar “was to make his shots difficult. And any time he was involved with another player, we wanted to trap him, and I thought we did a good job of that tonight.” Elijah Miller was chosen player of the game for the Panthers, while Chris Ruta earned the laurels for the Capers. In the semis, the top-seeded Dalhousie Tigers nipped the 5th-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks 87-85 on a trey by Keevan Veinot with 49 seconds to play that gave the tigers their first lead of the second half. Memorial led 28-20 after one quarter as five different Sea-Hawks drained treys. They led 45-37 at the half as Cole Long lit up the scoreboard, and after notching a 9-0 run, extended their margin to 72-62 after three quarters. Veinot and Alex Carson combined for nine points as the Tigers rallied to within three early in the final frame. Boris Ristanovic answered with a pair of dunks but Shamar Burrows responded with a pair of buckets and a steal leading a runout for Tiger Ngala Nginyu, setting the stage for Veinot’s winning bomb. In the other semi, the 3rd-seeded University of Prince Edward Island Panthers dispatched the 2nd-seeded St. Francis Xavier X-Men 105-88 after leading 31-19, 63-42 and 82-65 at the quarters. Panther Elijah Miller again lit up the court with a dominant 20-point, first half performance, while Dakelle Brooks drilled five treys during the affair. St. FX rallied no closer than 10 in the second half. Miller said “I’m just trying my best to represent our university. We were ranked seventh in our conference and no one believed in us and they probably still can’t believe we’re in the finals.” Brooks said he spoke to his grandfather earlier, who told him “to just relax out there and enjoy the moment. I worked hard for this moment and I just took what he said to heart.” Panthers coach Darrell Glenn said the Panthers locked-down X-Men guards Justin Andrew and Avan Nava. “We have a tremendous amount of respect for both of those guys. We really just wanted to make all of their shots difficult, and I thought we did that for most of the game.” St. FX coach Tyrell Vernon said “the biggest thing today was defensive identity. We’ve been building it all season long and today it reared its head a little bit. Our deficiencies were glaring today and our veterans Justin [Andrew] and Jamie [White] don’t have any other games to bring that back for us, but the other guys do.” Elijah Miller was chosen player of the game for the Panthers, while David Muenkat earned the laurels for the X-Men. In the final, the top-seeded Dalhousie Tigers earned their third consecutive title by dispatching the 3rd-seeded University of Prince Edward Island Panthers 84-78 on the strength of a furious fourth-quarter rally. The Panthers led 24-14, 49-35 (after ripping off a 10-0 run) and 63-56 at the quarters. But Keevan Veinot and Alex Carson nailed back-to-back treys to open the final frame. Dakelle Brooks responded with a trey for the Panthers. Carson then drilled another bomb. Samuel Wade added a layup to give the Tigers their first lead of the half. Carson added another layup before Tigers player of the game Shamar Burrows drilled a trey to give them a six-point advantage and Dalhousie rolled to the win. Panthers coach Darrell Glenn said his troops “gave everything they had. … We played against some seasoned veterans and there was a lot of opportunities for us to quit but we didn’t.” Tournament MVP Keevan Veinot paced the Tigers with 19 on 7-19 from the floor, 3-9 from the arc, 2-2 from the line, 6 boards, 9 assists and 2 steals.
