The Ravens appeared to finally get on track in the fourth frame when Cordell Veira notched back-to-back treys but they soon found themselves in foul trouble and Gaels brothers Cole and Luka Syllas rallied Queen’s to knot the score at 72. The Gaels kept parading to the foul line before Cole Syllas iced the win with a late layup. In the other West quarterfinal, the 4th-seeded Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks stomped the 5th-seeded Western Mustangs 103-72 after leading 10-0 early and 25-13, 53-30 and 79-51 at the quarters. Golden Hawks coach Justin Serresse said his troops focused on containing Western gunner Omar Shiddo. “You don’t guard a guy like that one-on-one, you guard him with team effort, everybody’s paying attention to him. … It was a team effort from top to bottom. Everybody that played contributed positively.” Serresse added that a Ben Stevens double-double was helpful. “Usually, Ben has been pretty strong in the playoffs. For him it’s all about the energy he puts in on the floor. In the Wilson Cup final, the Brock Badgers ended a 30-year championship drought and earned their second OUA title by torching the Queen’s Gaels 95-75 after leading 24-15, 45-33 and 70-58 at the quarters. Badgers forward Kascius Small-Martin said “We didn’t even know if we were going to have a season this year, so to have it and win it all is unreal. It’s a dream come true, honestly. We just stuck to the plan, stuck to the script and worked hard day in and day out and we got the job done.” Badgers coach Willy Manigat said “we fight. Every day is about fight, every day is about discipline, and every day is about being the best versions of ourselves. When you’re doing that every day then these games feel like battles, and you build comradery. We have student-athletes that understand that. Understanding it’s about buying in and doing their best. After the season, Ontario Tech coach Greg Francis announced that he was taking a personal leave of absence. He was replaced on an interim basis by three-year lead assistant Deluxshan Pathmanathan, who formerly spent three seasons as an assistant at Durham College. He also served a stint as the coach of the Sri Lankan U18 national team.
York coach Nate Philippe resigns after years at the helm to begin a career in the finance industry. He is replaced on an interim basis by assistant Jermain Holness. After a single season, he is given the job on a permanent basis. Holness previously served as an assistant on the Toronto Metropolitan coaching staff. He also served as an assistant with the CEBl’s Edmonton Stingers in 2020 and 2021. The Toronto native was a graduate of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona.
Coach John Campbell and the University of Toronto part ways with no explanation provided for the change. Campbell is replaced on an interim basis by assistant Madhav Trivedi. After one season, Trivedi is given the job on a permanent basic. Trevedi served as an Varsity Blues assistant for two years. He was formerly the interim head coach at Brock for one season. Prior to that, he spent five seasons as an associate coach for McGill University, two seasons as an assistant coach with the Queen’s Gaels and one season as an assistant at Toronto Metropolitan University after playing four years with the Rams.
Laurentian coach Shawn Swords announces that he is taking a one-year leave of absence to serve as an assistant with the G-League’s Long Island Nets. He is replaced on an interim basis with assistant Georges Serresse. A graduate of Laurentian, Serressee played professionally for four years in France before returning to Canada, where he toiled three years with the National Basketball League of Canada’s Sudbury Five.
