After that we had to play catch-up basketball. We’d work hard to get the ball, but then give it right back to them. We managed to narrow the lead down to 10 points, but just ran out of gas.” Lucy Burdz paced Manitoba with 16 before picking up four fouls, as did Deb Dudar. “I had no choice but to sit them out,” said McNabb. Nova Scotia coach Keith MacKenzie said “we weren’t really trying to speed up the game. We’re down to nine players and we’re going to have to be careful.” Lucy Burdz paced Manitoba with 16. Quebec led 42-37 at the half. …………………………………………………… Saskatchewan pounded Alberta 75-56 as Martina Cain scored 16, Annette Pfeiffer 14, Barb Forsyth 13, Lori Topp 9 and Brenda Ash 9. Saskatchewan coach Debbie Ward told the Regina Leader-Post that “the girls played just super. They were together and did everything that we’ve been working on the past three months just right.” Saskatchewan led 36-25 at the half.
In the semis, Quebec thrashed Nova Scotia 75-43 as Linda Marquis scored 14, Wendy Verrecchia 10, along with 9 boards, and Sue Hylland 10. Janet Lumsden led Nova Scotia with 10. Quebec coach Wayne Hussey felts his team will have an edge in the final. “Our sixth, seventh and eighth players are better than Ontario’s.” Ontario coach Peter Campbell said “well, he’s the junior national coach, he should know. All I can say is I hope our ninth and 10th players are better.”
In the other semi, Ontario whipped New Brunswick 89-40 as Linda Edwards scored 20, while nabbing 15 boards, Teresa Grant 20 and Linda Palango 16. Laura Sanders led New Brunswick with 9. New Brunswick coach Joyce Slipp said her team was undone by fatigue and injuries. Ontario hit 41-79 from the floor, while New Brunswick hit 15-59.
The 11th-place Northwest Territories included Ashley, Cook, Dlewett, Hicks, Illnik, Iyago, Kuksu, Manik, Tutanuak, Witt.
In the 9th-place playoff, Newfoundland clocked Alberta 62-46. Newfoundland included Michelle Doyle, Karen Baggs, Anne Browne, Dicks, Eason, Eaton, Martin, McCarthy, Mcdonald, Piercey, Power, Sutton. Alberta (coached by Arnold Ortfield, assisted by Glenda Leach) included Shelagh Crawford, Bev Demchuk, Shelley Gahagan, Nancy Ferguson, Theresa Steit, Lorraine Glass, Brenda MacKinnon, Nancy Matheseon, Kathy Mills and Linda Smith.
In the 7th-place match, PEI edged British Columbia 62-57. PEI included Douglas, Drysdale, Dunn, Lester, Macadam, McGowan, Morris, Ready, Rowell, Stewart. British Columbia included Janet Atkinson, Shannon Cahill, Dona Digey, Karen Flaten, Beverly Gait, Cheryl Kelsey, Sandy Lewis, Terri Rosman, Sue Turnbull, Tracey Vieaux.
In the 5th-place playoff, Manitoba dusted Saskatchewan 58-34. Manitoba (coached by Dave McNabb) included Lucy Burdz, Deguefe, Karen Dinse, Deb Dudar, Joyal, Donna Leonhardt, Heather McIntosh, Picken, Helga Sickert, and Weir. Saskatchewan (coached by Debbie Ward) included Brenda Ash, Brick, Martina Cain, Dzdel, Barb Forsyth, Annette Pfeiffer, Rowley, Lori Topp, Vetter, Von Hagen
In the bronze medal match, Nova Scotia pounded New Brunswick 61-43 to earn the province’s first basketball medal. Nova Scotia hit three late buckets to take a 29-24 lead at the half. Nova Scotia coach Keith MacKenzie called it the “turning point. It gave us a more positive outlook coming out for the second half.” They went on to dominate the second half, eventually hitting 40% from the floor and outrebounding New Brunswick 44-33. Carol Rosenthall paced Nova Scotia with 22. New Brunswick hit 31% from the floor. Mackenzie said “we were tight at the start after being beaten so badly last night (75-43 by Quebec). … And Sharon Newman did a great job (off the bench), as did Joyce Smith.” Newman scored 6. Laura Sanders led New Brunswick with 9. New Brunswick coach Joyce Slipp said there was a “simple” explanation for the loss. “They are better than we are and they have more experience.” New Brunswick (coached by Slipp and managed by Greg Gould) also included Patricia Campbell, Darla Jo Diamond, Carolyn Gammon, Karen Sue Hardy, Jill Jeffrey, Sharon Keays, Ann Marie McClellan, Marleigh Moran and Carla Ryder.
In the final, Linda Marquis scored 18 and Sue Hylland 14 to lead Quebec past Ontario 71-52. Karen Diaz added 11 and Connie Classen 10 and 8 boards, Karen Diaz 10, Marie Josee Codere 9 and Helen McAuley 7. Angela Van Barneveld grabbed 5 rebounds. Teresa Grant led Ontario with 15. Linda Edwards added 10 on 4-13 from the floor and 2-6 from the line. “We played our game for the most part,” said Quebec coach Wayne Hussey told Canadian Press. Quebec broke to a 30-13 lead but Ontario rallied to within three before Quebec took command, leading 36-30 at the half and opening the second frame with a 9-2 run. Ontario coach Peter Campbell said Quebec’s experience proved the difference. “It was no disgrace. We lost to a real good team. We did our best, but it just wasn’t enough.” Hussey earned his third Canada Games gold, previously winning as an athletic in 1971 and as a coach in 1975. Hylland said the gold “was our goal for almost the last three years, and what we’ve been aiming for.” Edwards said “good defense” and Quebec’s ability to deny the ball was the difference.
