Sister Brendan scored 10 points in the first half and finished with 14. Donna Ferguson added 11, Tina Poole 8 and Pat Causey 8. Gail Streeter led Victoria with 14. Dierdre Ogden added 6. Guard Gerry Redding injured her leg early in the game and did not return for Victoria.
Hamilton thumped Victoria First United 42-34 as Pat Macdonald scored 14, Wendy Connor 8, Thomas 5, Gilmour 4, Kennedy 3, Berry 2 and Miller 1. Dumonts coach Earl Begg told the Hamilton Spectator that “we played an offence we had only used twice all season. And we used a man-to-man defence we had never used before. We looked bad.” Victoria was led by Gail Streetor, who scored 12. Heather Wood added 5, Dierdre Ogden 5, Harknett 4, McKechnie 4, Morrison 2 and Jackson 2, while Redding was scoreless. Victoria was ahead 22-18 at the half and 32-29 at the three-quarter mark. But Hamilton went on an 8-0 run to open the fourth quarter, with MacDonald dominating the boards. Entering the tournament, Hamilton was (23-2-3).
In the decisive contest, the Hamilton Dumonts stunned heavily favored University of Saskatchewan 54-49 after leading 31-19 at the half. Hamilton opened with a 13-3 run as Pat MacDonald scored 18 points and grabbed 11 boards in the first half. MacDonald fouled out with 16 minutes to go. Saskatchewan also lost Donna Ferguson, Joyce Elke and Pat Kilpatrick to fouls. That hurt, said Saskatchewan coach Pat Jackson. “When you use a running offence, you need frequent substitutions to keep fresh and when we lost Ferguson, Kilpatrick and Elke, it hampered our chances for a second half comeback.” Lindy Thomas added 12 for Hamilton on 8-13 from the floor despite playing with a charleyhorse, Pam Wedd 9, Wendy Connor 8, Gilmour 3, Millar 3 and Wright 1. Thomas and Betty McMillan put on a dazzling ball control display in the second half for Hamilton. Saskatchewan was led by Tina Poole’s 14 and Sherril Roberts 9. Spence added 6, Elke 5, Brendan 5, Cawsey 4, Kirkpatrick 3, Ford 2 and Ferguson 1. Coach Earl Begg told Canadian Press that “they just played tremendously. They won it on sheer desire. It was my most satisfying win in basketball. The team and I got more satisfaction from winning the title this year than in Hamilton in 1968. We won the championship last year in our own city, but this time it was different; we took it away from home.” Two Huskies, Sister Brendon and Pat Kirkpatrick, were not eligible to pay in the tournament because of its age restrictions, while the Huskies picked up Kathy Meyers from the Saskatoon Molsons.
