The NBIAA announced that all girl’s teams would commence playing boy’s rules as of the 67 campaign. But the NBIAA voted to wait until the fall of 1967 to adopt the CABA rules for girls’ interscholastic teams throughout the province so it isn’t until the following year that girl’s high school play adopts the five-man game.
In the quarterfinals, held in Oromocto, the Saint John St. Vincent’s Fighting Irish whipped the Edmundston Cormier Cougars 65-33 as Doucett scored 23, Fleiger 16, Robertson 14, Armstrong 11 and Bastarache 1. Cathy Paget scored 9 to lead the Cougars (coach Merita Ryan, manager Yvonne Oullette). Penny Dickinson added 8, Debbie Dickinson 7, Susan Tweedie 6, Carol Glencross 2 and Barbara Mcleod 1, while Jane Keenan, Kennedy, Mary Forbes, Susan Rice, Mary Chalifour and Louise Cloutier were scoreless.
The Fredericton Black Kats clubbed the Moncton Harrison Trimble Trojans 39-24 as Sedgewick scored 14, Johnson 12, Arseneau 5, Thornton 4, Henheffer 2, McKay 2 and Chalmers 1. Terry Lebans led the Trojans with 12. Whalen added 6, Hoar 5 and Ritchie 1, while McCarthy, Morrow, Sears, Fownes, Smith, Murphy and Wrendon were scoreless.
The Moncton Purple Knights clocked the Sunny Corner North & South Esk Cobras 45-12 as Hunes scored 12, Buzzell 10, Wallace 5, Hogan 4, Clowater 4, Douthwright 4, Douthwright 4, Boby 2, Allen 2 and MacNeish 2. Alta Young led the Cobras with 6. Foran added 2, Karen Hare 1, A Esson 1, Murphy 1 and Judy Somers 1, while Taylor, Connors, J Esson and Lefelare? were scoreless.
In the last quarterfinal, the Saint John Greyhounds defeated the Oromocto Blues 44-40 as Nicolle scored 22, Moore 16, Neilson 2, McIntosh 2, Palmer 1 and Lawton 1. Melanie Murray scored 19 to pace the Blues (coach Margaret Donovan). Luane Doek added 9, Carolyn Marcum 9, Wood 3 and Johnson 2, while Marion Murray, Burns, Wall, Zwicker, Belliveau and McArthur were scoreless.
In the semis, the Fredericton Black Kats defeated St. John St. Vincent’s 41-40 in overtime as Sedgewick hit the winner with 42 seconds to play. The following day, it was reported that McKay hit the winner. Black Kat Henheffer pilfered the ball with 14 seconds to play for a runout layup that forced overtime. Johnson led the Black Kats with 15. Sedgewick added 13, Arseneau 5, Henheffer 5 and McKay 3. Armstrong led the Fighting Irish with 11. Fleiger added 10, Robertson 9, Doucett 8 and Rooney 2.
In the other semi, the Moncton Purple Knights mauled the Saint John Greyhounds 42-16 as Clowater scored 12, Joyce Douthwright 12, Humes 11, Allen 3, Buzzell 2 and Hogan 2. Lawton led the Greyhounds with 10. Moore added 4 and Neilson 2.
In the bronze medal match, the Saint John St. Vincent’s Fighting Irish clocked the Saint John Greyhounds 44-19 as Fleiger scored 12, Robertson 11, Doucett 10, Armstrong 6, Flynn 2, Bastarache 2 and Rooney 1. Charlotte Moore led the Greyhounds (coach Gladys Bell) with 8. Barb Nicolle added 5, Linda Lawton 3 and Mary Jane McLennan 3, while Susan neilson, McIntosh, Palmer, Bramen and Jellison were scoreless.
In the final, the Fredericton Black Kats edged the Moncton Purple Knights 31-30 in overtime. Mary Sedgewick, who was 0-4 from the foul line in regulation play, hit a free throw in overtime to give Fredericton the win. Moncton’s Hogan had forced overtime with a bucket with 37 seconds to play. Black Kats coach Betty Robertson told the Saint John Telegraph-Journal that “we got a break. They didn’t.” Sedgewick led the Black Kats with 13. Johnston added 8, McKay 5, Arseneau 3 and Chalmers 2. Buzzell paced the Purple Knights with 12. Humes added 11, Douthwright 4 and Boby 3.
