The Gophers included Nola Shyiak, Jill Lorenzen, Donna McNeill. …………………………………………………… In the final, the Scott Blues edged the Luther Lions 60-58 in double overtime as Marilyn Andrews and Sheila Kurtz each hit two free throws in the second extra session to pull out the win. Marilyn Andrew paced the Blues with 27. Karen Bistretzan added 17. Joanne Brown led the Lions with 24. Nancy Vancise added 11. The Lions also included Becky Lee, Holly MacRae. Blues coach Howard Jesse told the Regina Leader-Post that “in a game like that, there shouldn’t be a winner and a loser. We were just fortunate enough to sink a basket or two at the right time. Really, this game could have gone either way.” Karen Bistretzan hit a free throw with four seconds to play to force a second overtime. Blues guard Marilyn Andrew said ‘we were all nervous. Our fans were really great. They really picked us up. They helped us fight back.”

The Lions included Joanne Brown, Nancy Vancise, Holly MacRae. …………………………………………………… In the final, the Regina Scott Blues nipped the Moose Jaw Riverview Royals 60-58 as Karen Bistretzan scored 19, Donna Stoshnoff 13, Darlene Schultz 12 and Marilyn Andrew 11. Penny Patterson led the Royals with 28. Donna Stushnoff added 13. Blues coach Howard Jesse told the Regina Leader-Post that “it’s exciting to win. We really wanted this game. At the beginning of the season, we set winning the championship our goal. Going to provincials just makes the season all that much better.”
In the Northern playoffs: …………………………………………………… The Humboldt Hawks defeated the Saskatoon Nutana Collegiate Blues x-x. The Blues included Cindy Bower, Brenda Yantz, Chris Suessmilch, Wendy Jeffrey.
In the provincial semis, the Regina Scott Blues dispatched the Rosetown Royals 73-61. The Blues led 26-14 at the half and 49-29 in the second half but the Royals rallied to within 60-55 with three minutes to play. Gaylene Galenzoski led the Blues with 32. Marilyn Andrew added 16 and Karen Bistretzan 16. Blues coach Howard Jesse told the Regina Leader-Post that “I don’t know what it is with these girls. But they just don’t like to win big. We build up a little bit of continuity and just as quickly, we destroy it. Coming to provincials means a lot to us. We had a case of the nerves.” Kelly Pich paced the Royals with 21. Karen Sparks added 14 and Stephanie Miller 8.
In the other semi, the Wynyard Bears edged the Nipawin L.P. Miller Bears 48-44 as Shelley Bzdel scored 22, Chris Bzedel 10 and Shelley Jordan 9. Kelly Trainor led the Bears with 16. Cindy Toy added 14 and Jac-o Brunelle 14.
In the bronze medal match, the Nipawin L.P. Miller Bears clipped the Rosetown Royals 66-52 as Jac-O Brunelle scored 25, Cindy Toy 16 and Bonnie Newton 14. Karen Sparks led the Royals with 18. Brenda Mitchell added 11 and Cecile Zinger 9. The Royals also included Kelly Pich, Stephanie Miller.
In the final, the Regina Scott Blues defeated the Wynyard Bears 46-44 after leading 24-22 at the half. Marilyn Andrew paced the Blues with 15. Gaylene Galenzoski added 13 and Karen Bistretzan 10. Colleen Bzdel led the Bears with 17. Chris Bzdel added 16 and Shelly Bzdel 4. Blues coach Howard Jesse told the Regina Leader-Post that in the second half, “we starting making the same old mistakes. Wynyard played really tough defence. They put the strong press on and we threw the ball away a couple of times. But it wasn’t so much the turnovers but the defences of both teams. We played a strong match zone against them and they, man-to-man against us. But it’s great to win. This win has been long awaited for the school. I really don’t think the girls realized what they accomplished. I think that will set in later.”
