We’ve been coming close all season and tonight finally put it together. We played a zone more than we had in the past. We had played man-to-man against O’Neil before. I’ve been through so many these barnburners in the last little while. I know they’re exciting and thrilling for the fans but for the coaches, it’s murder. I’d rather win by 20 any time.” Spartans coach Wilma Dowling said “I can’t get upset after a game like that. The girls felt we could win. They never doubted it. They had confidence. Unfortunately, we got cold in the second half. That was the turning point of the game.” The Spartans (coached by Wilma Dowling) also included Debbie Todd, Jill McCrimmon. …………………………………………………… In the semis, the Regina Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns nipped the Regina Archbishop M.C. The defensive pressure of Jennifer Boso, Teresa Portius, Jackie Lavallee and Donna Larocque forced a host of Crusader turnovers. Boso told the Regina Leader-Post that “we knew we had to keep the ball away from Miazga. We tried to keep her away from the middle. I think we did a good job.” Marian led 40-32 at the half and handcuffed Crusader point guard Andrea Karwacki, who scored 2 and couldn’t run the offensive. Mary Lou Tourigny said “for sure we’re peaking right now. At the beginning of the game, we were a little tight but we loosened up in the second half.” The Crusaders rallied to within 58-49 with five minutes to play. Boso said “after playing hard all game, we just started to slack off a bit in the end. We held on though and now we’re one game away.” Crusaders coach Heather Witzel said “Regina played a strong game, no doubt. Their players are like gamblers. It’s like they have an instinct for the ball. I don’t know if they work at it or not but they always seemed to know where the ball was going and be in a position to cause the turnover.” Crusaders coach Heather Witzel told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that Marian’s three-quarter court press “forced us out of our offence to the point it felt good just getting the ball over half. I don’t know if they work on it and I don’t know if it can be coached for that matter. But they always seem to be there to intercept our passes. It was almost instinctive.”

In the other semi, the Saskatoon E.D. Feehan Trojans defeated the Regina Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns 65-51 as national volleyball team prospects Eileen Kramchynsky and Lynn Lieffers repeatedly out-leapt their foes and dominated the boards. Our first half was awful, just terrible.” The Trojans led 38-28 at the half. Trojans coach Sheila Chad told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “I tried to avoid telling them that (Leboldus) was in a (2-3) zone. They hear that and they seem to think they have to do something different. … They begin concentrating on ways beat the zone. Well, our offence is structured in such a way that it works against a zone or man. Best thing I could have done was to stay quiet. That way, they just kept running the offence.”

Trojans coach Sheila Chad told the Regina Leader-Post that “I remember that 0-16 year [four years earlier] like it was yesterday. I’d watch the top clubs and wish I had athletes like those clubs. Well, I’ve got the athletes now and we proved we can play. To be honest, I don’t know how we won it tonight. These girls wanted this game bad – real ad. They just went out and earned it.” Saints coach John MacDonald said “definitely, the foul trouble hurt us. Jennifer (Boso) is our spark plug out there and it hurt us not having her play aggressively. The strange part of this game though was that we couldn’t work the ball inside. All year, our bread and butter had been our inside game. Why do we do today? Try and shoot from outside.” Trojans point guard Tracy Kolody easy handled the Saint’s press. Chad told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “everything just came together in the last couple of weeks. Everything just clicked. I don’t know how else to explain it other than saying the kids really wanted it. I saw them doing things that we talked about two months ago, even a year ago, which as a coach was satisfying. But they won it. I didn’t score the points or get the rebounds. It’s the kids. They won it.”
