In the Regina city quarterfinals: …………………………………………………… The Dr. Martin Leboldus Golden Suns clipped the Martin Monarchs 71-58 as Anna Rizak scored 21 and Tracey Livingston 20. The Golden Suns took a 13-4 lead early but the Monarchs responded with a 13-0 run. Golden Suns coach Ron Rohac told the Regina Leader-Post that “we just seemed to go to sleep. We didn’t even catch the ball, let alone run. Martin gained the momentum and took it right to us.” The scored as knotted at 33 at the half but the Golden Suns got their transition game going in the second half. Monarchs coach Dianne Stober said “the kids played really well in the first half but in the second, their pressure got us in trouble.” Leanne White scored 17 to lead the Monarchs (coached by Dianne Stober). Karen Iverson added 17 and Keri Morin 14. …………………………………………………… The Archbishop M.C. O’Neill Titans dispatched the Thom Trojans 69-60 as Bonnie Giles scored 15 and Lori Lueck 14. The Titans led 20-4 early and were never threatened. Titans coach Sandy Harazny told the Regina Leader-Post that “our game plan was to use our press and try to force them to make some turnovers. And we wanted to control the fast break, got on their rebounders.” Trojans coach Henry Sauer said “the big problem was we had an emotional letdown this afternoon (having cut two players, including a starter for skipping classes). It was a tough decision but you’re running a school, and when it came down the final line, extracurricular is extracurricular. But I’m not taking anything away from O’Neil. They came out flying.” Titan Lori Lueck said “I think beating Campbell in the final game of the regular season really gave us confidence. When we’re under pressure, we play a lot better.” Bonnie Giles, who hit 7-9 from the line in the second half, said “in order to play well, you have to play teams better than you. That’s (foul shots) probably the thing we work on the most. Last year, in the junior semi-finals, we missed 29 shots.” Fern Thue notched 16 to lead the Trojans (coached by Henry Sauer). Chris Wiebe added 13, Lisa Ford 10 and Penny Tumack 10. The Trojans (coached by Henry Sauer) also included Kelly Christianson, Butz, Shannon Ashbrenner, Fern Thue. …………………………………………………… The Sheldon-Williams Spartans dusted the Marian Saints 65-48 as Jane Bolstad scored 22, Heather Babchuk 10 and Denise Barry 10. The Spartans led 30-27 at the half. Spartan Jane Bolstad told the Regina Leader-Post “we knew all along we could do it. It was just a matter of playing well and getting things together.” Spartans coach Wilma Dowling said “we started pressing. We made them play our game. They like to play a slow game. And losing Brenda Erick (to fouls), of course, that was probably the turning point.” Saints coach Debbie Ward said Erick fouled out, “psychologically our players just sort of said: ‘that’s it’. We’ve depended on her so much this year.” Brenda Erick led the Saints with 15. Karen Tell added 14. The Saints (coached by Debbie Ward) also included Behm, Jacqui Lavallee, Wappel, Carol Fergusson, Kathy Weisshaas. …………………………………………………… In the last quarterfinal, the Miller Marauders edged the Campbell Tartans 71-67 as Linda Kuzma scored 18, Verna Runge 17, Theresa Regel 17 and Janice Hanofski 10. Marauders coach Jim Gallagher told the Regina Leader-Post that “they really showed a lot of heart. It wasn’t us making mistakes, they just came back (from several 9-point plus deficits). They weren’t going to give it away. … There was no way we were going to blow them out.” Campbell coach Lyle Culham said “it was a dandy game, super game. We were so close, a couple mishandled balls and stuff like that. They (the Tartans) just played their hearts out.” Rhonda Elliott notched 20 to pace the Tartans. Joanne Gould added 16. The Tartans (coached by Lyle Culham) also included Rhonda Eberts, Charlene Dawson, Carol Ready, Elaine Johnson, Angela Cohee, Carolyn Juckes, McLean, Kenyon and Dawn Hudyma. …………………………………………………… In the semis, the Miller Marauders clubbed the O’Neil Titans 66-37 as Linda Kuzma scored 17 and Rosanne Exner 11. Lori Lueck led the Titans with 12. The Titans (coached by Sandy Harazny) also included Bonnie Giles, Lisa Lorence, Carla Ranalli, Cathy Opre, Karen Dermody. …………………………………………………… In the other semi, the Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns edged the Sheldon-Williams Spartans 46-40 as Annette Kurtz scored 16, Sharon Kubian 12 and Anna Rizak 11. Jane Bolstad the Spartans with 13. The Spartans (coached by Wilma Dowling) also included Heather Babchuk, Denise Barry, Margot Petrovic, Michelle Berry, Michelle Schappert, Sam Templeton, Debbie Weedmark. …………………………………………………… In the final, the Miller Marauders dispatched the Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns 63-56 in overtime. The Golden Suns led 27-22 at the half. The score was knotted at 53 after regulation. Janice Hanofski led the Marauders with 20. Theresa Regel added 15, Linda Kuzma 8, Rosanne Exner 6, Verna Runge 6, Tracy Richter 6 and C Exner 2. Marauders coach Jim Gallagher told the Regina Leader-Post that “I told the kids when we were tired for overtime, there’s no way you’re going to lose. I’ve never coached kids with hearts as big as theirs. I almost thought that was the key in that five minutes of overtime; there was no way they were going to let it get away from them.” In overtime, Verna Runge hit a bucket, then stole the ball to set up a runout. Leboldus had led by 10, and by 14, in regulation. Golden Suns coach Ron Rohac said “we had that game under control twice, in fact, three times, I thought. They got hot in the end and we lost confidence in our offence. We stopped shooting and that made the Miller zone look pretty awesome.” Janice Hanofski’s scored 6 of 8 Miller points in an 8-0 run to knot the score at 51. Hanofski said “that was lucky. I was scared at first but I just couldn’t stop. We had to keep givin’ er. Towards the end, when we started edging our way back, I knew we could do it. the last five were so great, we just wanted it so bad, we didn’t care how tired we were. We were just going to go out there and give ‘er.” Linda Kuzma said “I thought we were going to lose when we were down by 10 but some of the girls gave me the confidence. They said: we’ve been down before so we can come back. And we did.” Gallagher said “LeBoldus played a really good zone defence, they really did. The thing is, with our rules, the 30-second shot clock, you have to go to the hoop. You can’t stand around and be patient, so it took us a while to find the odd hole.” Anna Rizak led the Golden Suns with 20. Sharon Kubian added 11, M Mahoney 6, Annette Kuntz 6, Tracey Livingston 6 and Nimetz 3.

According to the Regina Leader-Post, no south regionals were held.

In the provincial semis, the Regina Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns defeated Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls 56-51 despite trailing at the half 26-26. LeBoldus Golden Suns coach Ron Rohac delivered a no-guff speech to his troops in the lockers. “We couldn’t quit. We never have … except in the city final. We had a letdown there it cost us the championship (a 63-56 loss to Regina Miller). So I told them, we’ve got to run right to the end and punch this one through,” he told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. He told the Regina Leader-Post that “I told them at the second half that we have to start running and putting up shots. We didn’t shoot in the first half and we didn’t have the right people putting them up when we did.” Souls coach Pat Wegner said “we went down the floor three of four times without even putting the ball up. And they came down and popped them in. It was as simple as that.” The Golden Suns were frustrated by Evan Hardy’s defence and nervous. But they rallied to within 32-29 at the six-minute mark and took the lead 36-34 on a Tracey Livingston bucket. Anna Rizak led the Golden Suns with 20. Tracey Livingston added 12 and Sharon Kubian 10. Darlene Nykiforuk led Evan Hardy with 18. Jay Kost added 10.

In the other semi, the Regina Miller Marauders trailed 35-34 at the half but defeated the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders 62-55 as Linda Kuzma ignited a decisive 12-0 second-half run. Janice Hanofski paced the Marauders with 15. Theresa added Regel 11 and Tracy Richter 10. Sandra Peterson led the Marauders with 13. Jami Burgess added 11. Miller coach Jim Gallagher told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “it’s supposed to be a very disciplined fast break that we run. But it definitely wasn’t, not in the first half. We were forcing it and that almost cost us the game. By the second half, it was little more controlled.” Gallagher told the Regina Leader-Post that “the game did more to wreck my nervous system than the last half of the season. We made a lot of mistakes. We played bad basketball. The girls know it and I know it. Maybe it’s good to get it out of our system.” Murray coach Dorothy Lukkie said “it was a rough game, very physical. The girls aren’t really used to that. We would get going and then slow down.”

In the bronze medal match, the Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls defeated the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders 66-58. The Marauders included Dawne Lindholm, Sandra Peterson, Jami Burgess, Kate Allen, Debbie Lougheed, Judy Lang, Patty Gorin, Faith Bollan.

In the final, the Regina Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns nipped the Regina Miller Marauders 52-50 despite trailing 16-3 and 38-27 at the half. Miller’s full-court press rattled the Golden Suns early but they eventually settled down. The Golden Suns also capitalized on Marauder foul trouble. Four Marauders fouled out and Sharon Kubian hit a pair of free throws to give the Golden Suns their first lead at 50-49. Kubian told the Regina Leader-Post that “I was really, really worried in the first half. I don’t know, near the end I really didn’t think we could come back. Then Mr. Rohac gave us a good talking to and we got up. We started pressing and Miller seemed to get mixed up. We just turned it on.” Golden Suns coach Ron Rohac said “I told them they weren’t out of this ball game, even when we were down by 13 because they were in big trouble with fouls. We knew as long as we were close, they just had to keep putting the shots up. The points were going to come. It was just a matter of biding their time.” Sharon Kubian paced LeBoldus Golden Suns with 23, including 7-8 from the line in the final three and a half minutes of play. “I never shot foul shots like that in my life. I was just amazed,” Kubian said. Tracey Livingston added 10, Kuntz 8, Anna Rizak 6, Nimetz 2, Ghanam 2 and Mahoney 1. Janice Hanofski and Verna Runge scored 10 apiece for Miller. Richert added 9, Kuzma 8, Regel 5, Dolonski 4, R Exner 2 and C Exner 2. Marauders coach Jim Gallagher said “Sharon Kubian played excellent. We shut down Anna Rizak and Sharon Kubian made the difference.” Rohac said “Sharon was just everything. She played with four fouls the last 10 minutes. She knew she had to be in there to win.” Gallagher said “that was the gutsiest display I’ve seen out of any team besides mine this year. They played unbelievable ball in the second half. They just kept coming and coming. We didn’t let up even though we were in foul trouble.” Rohac told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “we’re not the biggest and we’re not the fastest but we’re the best.”
