In the Regina city quarterfinals: …………………………………………………… The Campbell Tartans defeated the Archbishop M.C. O’Neill Titans 52-46 as Barb Forsyth scored 24. The Tartans led 28-23 at the half and 52-40 with three minutes play. The Titans exploded for six unanswered but fell short in the rally. Titans coach Mike O’Donnell told the Regina Leader-Post that “when we scored those six points, I thought we might be able to do it. But it didn’t work out that way. I’m kind of happy, really. I thought the girls tried really hard and that’s all you can ask for. I hope they were a little disappointed that they lost, and they were, so that next time maybe they’ll be just a little hungrier.” The Tartans Heather Bryan and Linda Vansland struggled on the boards. Tartans coach Kelly Lovering said “we’re still slumping. We must have been playing above our heads at the beginning of the year because we’re just not the same team. But you have to give them credit. Mike really has his kids fired up. And that’s the way to do it – get your kids about a foot off the ground and then send them out there to do the job.” Sandy Bresciam scored 16 to lead the Titans (coached by Mike O’Donnell). Donna Donnelly added 12. The Titans (coached by Mike O’Donnell) also included Angel Eahman, Linda Labbie. …………………………………………………… The Thom Trojans clipped the Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns 70-57 as Deb Boris scored 27, Lorraine McCormack 10 and Martin Cain 10. The Trojans led 36-32 at the half. Golden Suns coach Sandy Harazny told the Regina Leader-Post that “we just didn’t run our offence well enough in the second half. We got excited and threw the ball away a lot. And we didn’t shoot very well either. We tried a lot of long shots, which isn’t in our game plan. But I am pleased that they tried very hard.” Sheila McCudden scored 24 to pace the Golden Suns (coached by Sandy Harazny). Kathy Gazda added 19. The Golden Suns (coached by Sandy Harazny) also included Terri McDonald, Gail Young, Cathy Stepan. …………………………………………………… The Miller Marauders whipped the Martin Monarchs 71-45 as Edwina Solomon scored 18 and Linda Kuzma 12. The Marauders led 31-26 at the half. Martin coach Dieter Magnus told the Regina Leader-Post that “we came up a little flat the wrong time. They beat us on hustle tonight. They outhustled us to the loose balls. Inexperience hurt us too. None of the girls had played in the city playoffs before and this is my first year as coach.” Heather Gini paced the Monarchs with 22. The Monarchs (coached by Dieter Magnus) also included Keri Moran, Laurie Topp, Debbie Kulyk, Tammy Crippen. …………………………………………………… The Marian Saints stomped the Sheldon-Williams Spartans 63-37 as Brenda Erick scored 14 and Lori Tapp 14. Saints coach Debbie Ward told the Regina Leader-Post that “I’m pleased with everyone. We were a little slow getting started. But that’s because we were taking our time running the offence, which is what we’ve been working on lately.” Spartans coach Wilma Dowling said “we didn’t shoot well at all. And we didn’t play well defensively either. We’re not seasoned enough yet, I guess. The girls have improved a lot since the season started though. It didn’t look like it today but they have improved.” Linda Minor notched 9 to pace the Spartans. Susan Turnbull added 8. The Spartans (coached by Wilma Dowling) also included Shirley Duff, Jan Peterson, Tracy Minor, Michelle Barry. …………………………………………………… In the semis, the Marian Saints nipped the Campbell Tartans 47-46 as Sandy Schamber scored 18. Barb Forsyth led the Tartans with 15. Connie More added 10 and Linda Vensland 10. The Tartans (coached by Kelly Lovering) also included Charlene Mironuck, Heather Bray. The Saints led 26-16 at the half and by 10 for most of the second half. The Tartans whittled it down to 47-46 with 37 seconds to play and were inbounding the ball with one second to play but Heather Bray’s pass was intercepted. Saints coach Debbie Ward told the Regina Leader-Post that “we didn’t play very well at all. Campbell just kept coming and it could easily have been them that won instead of us.” Tartans coach Kelly Lovering, who retired after the season after eight years at the helm, said he was “proud of the girls. They should some guts tonight. They weren’t even supposed to be in this one and they almost won it. There was no loser in this game. If Marian should go on to win the city and provincial championships, they’ll have to look back to our game and say to themselves: ‘hey, that’s the one that did it’.” …………………………………………………… In the other semi, the Thom Trojans dispatched the Miller Marauders 52-44 as Deb Boris scored 25 and Lorraine McCormack 16. The Trojans led 25-16 at the half. Marauders coach Jim Gallagher told the Regina Leader-Post that “the fastbreak was there but it didn’t kill us. We played some good defence holding them to 52 points but their shooting made the difference. Their experience showed too. They didn’t lose their heads. And boy did we have bad luck with the rims. How many times did the ball hit the rim, roll in and then roll out? We usually have some luck with the rims but we sure didn’t tonight.” Trojans coach Henri Saucier said “they played good defence against us. If they a little more luck with their shooting, they would be going on, instead of us. Heck, they’re a good team.” Edwina Solomon scored 18 to lead the Marauders. The Marauders (coached by Jim Gallagher and Dieter Magnu) also included Linda Kuzma, Roxanne Exner, Verna Runge, Marlene Heuser. …………………………………………………… In the finals, the Marian Saints clubbed the Thom Trojans 61-43 as Sandy Schamber scored 15, Lori Tapp 14, Annette Kurtana 10, Brenda Erick 6 and D Schmidt 2, while Carla Drozda, Sheila Molloy and P Mead were scoreless. Marian broke to a 10-0 lead and extended the margin to 34-22 at the half. Marian’s Brenda Erick dominated the boards, while Sheila Molloy repeatedly pilfered the ball. Marian coach Debbie Ward told the Regina Leader-Post that “Brenda Erick was just rebounding super. Carla Drozda and Sheila Molloy were putting pressure on them all the time. … They played the whole game today and that’s really good for them.” Trojans coach Henri Saucier said “I think our problem is that we lack consistency. … Those first few minutes killed us. It just seemed like everything we took as off. The shooting accuracy was the major difference.” Deb Boris led the Trojans with 18. Martina Cain added 10, Karin Winkler 5, K Christianson 4 and M Maguire 2, while Auda Assinger was scoreless.

Souls coach Pat Wegner told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “we got off to a slow start but things started coming around in the second. We were rebounding better and shots were starting to go in. Defensively, we played really well. That’s the strength of our game.” Karen Milner led the Mustangs with 11. Beth Doerksen added 6. The Mustangs also included Joan Patola. …………………………………………………… In the other semi, the Walter Murray Marauders clipped the Aden Bowman Bears 49-39 as Alison Lang scored 21 and Susan Carter 6. It’s tough to defend.” The Bears (coached by Joyce Didor) included Lynn Gordon, Julie Van Kampen, Cathy Ness. …………………………………………………… In the final, the Walter Murray Marauders defeated the Evan Hardy Souls 37-32 as Helen Kelly scored 13, Alison Lang 8 and Susan Carter 7. Leslie Burton led the Souls with 17. Jay Kost added 4 and Cheryl Anderson 3. Souls coach Pat Wegner told the Star-Phoenix that “we were missing a bit of offence. We were tense on offence and didn’t take enough shots.”

In the provincial semis, the Regina Marian Saints defeated the Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls 59-56. Hardy coach Pat Wegner told the Regina Leader-Post that “we were out to prove a point. A lot of people felt we didn’t belong in this. I think we proved something.” Marian led 16-4 after five minutes. Hardy rallied to within 5 only to see Carla Drozda and Brenda Erick hit buckets to pull Marian back ahead by 11. A late 10-point rally brought Hardy back to within two. Wegner said “they did a good job coming back. We had never used a half court press before in a game situation and I’m really impressed with the way they handled it.” But the press led to many Marian fastbreak layups. Carla Drozda led the Saints with 17. Brenda Erick added 14. Jay Kost paced Evan Hardy with 13. Nancy Laxdal added 10.

In the other semi, the Regina Thom Trojans handed the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders only their second loss of the season by a 68-48 count. Murray coach Tina Bickner noted “they were fastbreaking very well in the first half. We were just too slow getting down the floor on defence.” Deb Boni led Thom with 20 points. Karin Winkler added 18 and Martina Cain 12. Alison Lang led Walter Murray with 22. Nancy Popoff added 8. Marauders coach Tina Bickner said “they were fast breaking very well in the first half. We were just too slow getting down the floor on defence.”

In the bronze medal match, the Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls edged the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders 58-53. Nancy Laxdal led the Souls with 15. Dawn Cory added 12, Leslie Burton 10 and Jay Kost 10. Allison Lang paced the Marauders with 14. Tammy Trapp added 10 and Helene Kelly 10. Hardy coach Pat Wegner told the Regina Leader-Post that “the mixing up of defences helped us but it also hurt us. What saved us was their hustle.” Marauders coach Tina Bickner said “Hardy played well but mixing up the defences confused the kids too.” The Marauders also included Susan Carter, Nancy Popoff.

In the final, the Regina Marian Saints defeated the Regina Thom Trojans 77-59. Coach Debbie Ward told the Regina Leader-Post that “we knew we had to stop their fastbreak.
