We beat them twice during the regular season but they beat us in their tournament and the girls wanted to get back at them for that.” Tartans coach Kelly Lovering said “they were number one last year but they lost the championship. So this year, they were determined to win it. You saw it out there, when they’re flying like were tonight, they’re untouchable.” Jan Tangjerd led the Tartans with 13. Judy Clarke led Gophers with 15. The Gophers (coached by Laurie Burgess) also included Cindy Clarke, Patti Culling, Harriet Cross, Donna Van Hagen. …………………………………………………… In the final, the Regina Marian Saints clubbed the Miller Marauders 52-31 as Lori Kozicki scored 24. The Saints led 21-14 at the half. Kozicki took command in the second half. Saints coach Debbie Ward told the Regina Leader-Post “I felt the zone would hold them because they don’t have as many good outside shooters. They played man-to-man and Lori is excellent in one-on-one situations. So I told her to keep driving for the basket.” Marauders coach Pat Pitsel said “they played a safe game. They used a 2-1-2 zone and we have a hard time against a zone defense because we’re a driving team. If they’d played man-to-man defence, it would have been more wide open.” Sandy Lobsinger led the Marauders with 11. Charlene Walker added 10. The Marauders (coached by Pat Pitsel) also included Janie Krause, Georgette Laliberte, Carole Flasch.
In the provincial final, Regina Marian defeated the Saskatoon Bedford Road Redmen 55-28. Marian coach Debbie Ward drilled the team all year on fundamentals and that proved instrumental in the win. Marian took a 32-9 lead at the half using a 2-1-2 offence in which they patiently worked the ball inside for a good shot, while playing man-to-man defence and picking up their checks at half court. Marian forced Bedford Road into a lot of long prayers. Bedford Road coach Kelly Bowers told the Regina Leader-Post that “what really killed us was their far superior shooting. They were sinking them from far out and when they missed, they got the rebounds. Sometimes they had 4 or 5 rebounds in a row and they just kept getting them. That’s the worst we’ve been beaten all year. They’re a really good team and they deserved it.” Ward noted that “it’s the first time we’ve been in the provincials. Everyone was ready and everyone played well.” All 11 Marian players got in the game. Eight of them scored. Centre Lori Kozicki scored 18, nine in each half. Patti Mayer added 10, including eight in the first half, Brenda Ash 8, Gini Wihak 7, Lynn Kozicki 6, Turner 3, Debbie Morton 2 and Candice Sebastien 1. Bonnie Wright led Bedford Road with 5. Giles added 4, S Klechner 4, M Kerr 2, A Kerr 2, Anderson 2, Kuzma 2, Nase 2 and Evelynn DeKok 1. Marian switched defences all game, which rattled Bedford Road. “I thought by doing that we’d confuse them,” said Ward. Indeed, whether it was 2-1-2 zone, man-to-man, or full-court pressure, Bedford Road had little answer.
