In the provincial quarterfinals, the Moose Jaw A.E. Peacock Toilers whipped the Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls 82-62. “This affords us an opportunity to get to that medal match now and we’re happy about that,” Toilers coach Mark Albert told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “The guys are feeling pretty good right now.” Tori Sealy dominated the floor for the Toilers. The 6-3 guard repeatedly pilfered balls and scored 20, including four treys, in the first half. He also engineered a 26-11 run in the second half to seal the deal. “He’s probably one of the best players in the province and you have to have a special defensive player to be able to contain him,” said Souls coach Jeff Colquhoun. “And we just didn’t have an answer for him.” Travis Weiss, Quentin Randall and Matthew Gottselig also stepped up for the Toilers, making it hard for the double-team Sealy. The Souls were also playing without high scorer Caleb Hagen, who was sitting out a one game suspension after being ejected from the Saskatoon city final a week earlier. “They didn’t shoot very well from the perimeter without him and I think that made a difference,” added Albert. “It was a real positive for us.” David Robinson led the Souls with 23. Bob Wicks added 13, Dean Broughton 7, Allan Stonehouse 5, Sahne Schwanbecck 5, Trevor Dawe 4, Tyler Youngs 2, Colin Herbert 2 and Sean Homenick 1, while Caleb Hagen and Garett Olver were scoreless. The Souls had no answer for Sealy, who finished with 31. “In the big games, I like to step up a little,” said Sealy. “I can’t explain the feeling, it’s great. You know you got the game wrapping up and are going on tomorrow and playing in the medal rounds for sure. Our whole team’s feeling great.” Despite the loss, Colquhoun was pleased. “It’s still been a pretty satisfying year for us. Any time you can get to Hoopla, it’s a good year.” Travis Weiss added 18 for the Toilers, Quentin Randall 10, Ryan Belsher 10, Matthew Gottselig 9, Joey Woo 3 and Jeremy Smith 2.

In the other quarterfinal, the 6th-seeded Prince Albert St. Mary Marauders upset the 3rd-seeded Regina Sheldon Williams Spartans 73-72 as Dwayne Gareau pulled down a rebound and hit a turnaround baseline jumper with five seconds to play. Gareau, who scored 27, hit three consecutive treys down the stretch as the Marauders rallied from a deficit. Ryan Pocha added 11 for the Marauders, Mike Robin 10, Cory Lavallee 8, Greg Doucette 7, Dan Dimair 5, Marc Peletier 3 and Curtis Bender 2. Jason Drummond led the Spartans with 23. Joel Passmore added 13, Lee Cherkas 13, Zach Michell 8, Cory Alkens 7, Brent Benson 2, Oscar Orellana 2, Pin Sisouphone 2 and Matt Cherkas 2, while Chad Ferguson was scoreless. The Spartans also included Shamarie Malabrem.

In the semis, the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders pounded the Prince St. Mary Marauders 89-72 as Brett Czarnota scored 33, Matthew Mitchell 17, Derek Boechler 17, Michael Espeseth 14 and Mark Roblin 8. Ryan Pocha led the Marauders with 26, including five treys in the second half. Dwayne Gareau added 22, Greg Doucette 8, Cory Lavallee 8, Mike Robin 4, Jon Moon 2 and Dan Simair 2. Crusaders coach Barry Rawlyk told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “our play was a little spotty in places. We obviously did some things right but there were other areas where I thought we could have been a little more consistent. … We knew they were going to cone and scrap and give us a good fight. But we matched up with them very well and as a result, we were able to stay with them. But as the game went on, I think fatigue because a factor and it semed to catch with them at the end.”

In the other semi, the top-seeded Regina city champion Balfour Redmen spanked the Moose Jaw A.E. Peacock Toilers 97-84 as Brenan Schwarz scored 33, Mike Hovland 23, Jeremy Illerbrun 14, Saylom Sanith 11, Greg Perrins 6, Jon Salgado 5, Chis Lupastin 4 and Andre Lemieux 1. Ryan Belsher led the Toilers with 22. Tori Sealy added 18, Quentin Randall 14, Matthew Gottselig 14, Travis Weiss 14 and Jeremy Smith 2. Toilers coach Mark Albert told the Regina Leader-Post that “I think everyone iin the province knew going into the tournament that Balfour was, head and shoulders, the number one team in the province. We knew we’d have to play exceptionally well and catch them on an off-night. I don’t want to say never but (to beat them), you have to catch them flat. They come in tides and you have to stem that tide when you can. They went on a run in the middle of the second half and a 10-point game turned into a 25-point game in about three minutes.”

In the bronze medal match, the Moose Jaw A.E. Peacock Toilers defeated the Prince Albert St. Mary Marauders 83-74 as Tori Sealy scored 26, Quentin Randall 20, Matthew Gottselig 16, Travis Weiss 12, Joey Wood 4, Aaron Taylor 3 and Ryan Belsher 2.         In the final, the Regina Balfour Redmen captured their first title since 1948 by stomped the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders 95-77. A perennial Regina power, Balfour had won five Regina titles in the 1990s but always came up short in the provincials. The Redmen finished 40-2 on the season, with an average margin of victory of 28 points. They won five preseason tourneys, losing only to Vancouver Carson Graham in the BRIT. They were led by 6-2 point guard Brenan Schwartz, who averaged 33 ppg in the run-up to the final. He was named tournament MVP at all the tournaments in which Balfour played. The title constituted a double for the school as Balfour also won the provincial girl’s title. Redmen coach Glen Fekula told the Regina Leader-Post that “the school finally did it and we finally did it. It feels good when you reach your goals and you reach the ultimate goal. They’re a good group of guys and they worked hard.” Schwartz said “I don’t think it’s sunk in yet that that was my last game. I feel like I’ve got practice tomorrow.” Jeremy Illerbrun said “it was one of our goals all season. We wanted the city and then the provincials.” Balfour led 41-29 at the half. The Crusaders rallied to within four but Balfour capitalized on runouts down the stretch as Crusader bombs led to long rebounds. Schartz hit two critical buckets down the stretch to expand a 5-point lead to nine. Schwartz said “they were shooting the ball well from the outside. You can only do that for so long. If they made every shot they took from the outside, they would have killed us. Every time they missed, we’re the kind of team that we’re gone. We have Hovland and Salgado down low, and Illerbrun and me up high. We never said die. I never felt at one moment that we’d lose that game. I wasn’t going to lose my last game. It wasn’t going to happen.” Schwarz told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “I just feel great that we got to win city’s and provincials in my last year. This is an exceptional feeling. To close out a senior year like this, it’s unbelievable. It doesn’t happen to many people.” Holy Cross’s Brett Czarnota said “we’re disappointed but we’re not upset with our season. We would have liked this one and had a real successful year but the breaks don’t always go your way.” The Crusaders came out of the gate tentative and flat while Balfour came out charging and built and early lead. Schwartz use his explosive speed to advantage, scoring 33, splitting seams between defenders. “Brenan is not only the best player that I’ve ever coached but I’m not aware of too many in Regina that have been better,” said Redmen coach Glen Fekula. “He’s a great athlete with a great attitude, handles the ball like crazy and is the refuse-to-lose type.” The Redmen led 41-29 at the half, easily overcoming periodic runs led by Brett Czarnota, Michael Espeseth and Mark Roblin. The Crusaders looked energized early in the second half as their pressure some dividends and they closed within four. But the Redmen kept the tempo up and the Crusaders wilted. “We kept them shooting on the outside and every time they missed, we were going the other way for a lay-up,” said Schwartz. “Then we just kept running and trying to be faster and they couldn’t get back.” Jeremy Ilerbrun added 29 for the Redmen, Jon Salgado 20, Saylim Sanith 7, Mike Jovland 3, Greg Perrins 2 and Andre Lemieux 1. Brett Czarnota led the Crusaders with 21. Mark Roblin added 19, Matthew Mitchell 12, Michael Espeseth 10, George Anonopoulos 7, Derek Boechler 6 and Michael Hinz 2.
