Good things happen when you work hard.” Balfour guard Brenan Schwartz said “we got lucky. We turned the ball over three times near the end. Now they can understand the pride involved in winning a provincial championship. It’s something they’ll always look back with a lot of gratification. … Defeat is a very good incentive. They [Holy Cross] had our number this season but that provided some motivation for us to play with a little more heart and desire and do more of the things that make us an effective basketball team. … Calvin dominated at both ends. He’s just gotten stronger and played with more confidence as the season went on. He can play with an intensity and a fire above anybody on our team. At times. And at other times, he seems to fall asleep. But in the last two weeks, he’s really, really been a fine player for us.” Palmer said “it’s the provincials. It makes everybody play better and you’ve just got to step up to the next level. … This feels great. There are some guys on this team I’ve played with for four years and it’s a real pleasure to win with them.” After Holy Cross took a 4-2 lead, the Souls exploded with a 28-7 run and led 43-23 at the half. Crusader Wade Bourassa said “normally when we had good games, we’d come out firing. Tonight, we came out firing but nothing was falling.” The Crusaders rallied within 49-38 but the Souls countered with a 10-1 run to ice it. Crusaders coach Barry Rawlyk said “we got behind early and it was an uphill battle all the way. We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we normally do … We didn’t get up and down the floor like we usually do and the team that controls the tempo is usually the one that comes out on top. They’re a good tea. I don’t want to take anything away from them. Tonight was their night.”
