In the semis, the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears whipped the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders 69-35 as Shane Haubich scored 14. Bears guard Steve Mitchell told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix “our defence did it for us. That’s what’s been doing it for us all year.” Tyler Birkham led the Crusaders with 10. The Crusaders also included John Macleod.

In the other semi, the Regina Balfour Redmen spanked the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders 95-79 in overtime as William Johnson scored 24, while nabbing 17 boards, Ryan Dowdeswell 16, Steve Kummerfield 16 and Darron Johnston 9. Shaun Nechvatal paced the Crusaders with 27 (also reported as 26). The Crusaders led 72-69 when Shaun Nechvatal fouled out and Balfour rallied to knot the score at 78 and force overtime on a bucket by Dowsdewell with five seconds to play in the regulation. He also notched the first bucket in overtime to ignite an 18-1 Redmen run. Dowsdewell told the Regina Leader-Post “that’s my career high.” As for the bucket that forced overtime, he noted “I didn’t really think of it like we were down two and needed it to tie. It makes us feel really good. That’s the way we can play. We weren’t playing well at the beginning. We weren’t executing and we were making bad decisions.” Johnson said “that was the toughest game we’ve played all year. I don’t think we expected it to be as hard. We knew it would be tough but we didn’t expect overtime.” The Crusaders broke to an early 14-2 lead as Shaun Nechvatal and Jarvis Kaiser dominated early. But William Johnson rallied the Redmen to within 43-42 at the half. Balfour’s Ryan Dowdeswell told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “we just didn’t come out as hard as could have. We were a bit (over-confident) at first but when we came out slow, we usually pick it up in time.” Johnson said “when Nechvatal went out, that gave us the little bit of momentum that we needed.” Balfour dominated the extra session despite having Dowdeswell and Tim Thomson foul out. Crusaders coach Barry Rawlyk said “we just ran out of steam in the last couple of minutes. Balfour is a team with tremendous depth and that’s what I think the difference was.” Rawlyk told the Leader-Post that losing Nechvatal “may have changed the complexion of the game. … It’s more than just his size. It’s his court presence and his leadership.”

In the bronze medal match, the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders dispatched the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders 73-66 as Rodney John scored 18 and Shaun Nechvatal 11. Griff Peet paced Carlton with 20. Paul Teeter added 10. The Crusaders also included Tyler Birkham.

In the final, the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears defeated the Regina Balfour Redmen 64-59 as Mike Scissons scored 13, Brian Kopach 13, Jamie Dickson 10 and Steve Mitchell 10. Steve Kummerfield led the Redmen with 13. William Johnson added 11 and Ryan Dowdeswell 11. The Bears had lost to Balfour during a preseason tournament. Mike May told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “we sat down and had a team meeting after that and said we’re going to meet these guys in the provincial final. So we came up with the name ‘Operation Hoopla’. We wanted a little payback … and this is so sweet.” The Redmen led 29-23 at the half on the offence of Somdet Hounphanh and Steve Kummerfield. But Scissons and Kopach rallied the Bears. Scisssons was forced to the sidelines in the second half with a twisted knee and Balfour leading 42-39. Then Haubich fouled out with Balfour leading 48-40. But the Bears defence clamped down and held the Redmen to 11 points over the last nine minutes and Bowman took a 60-59 lead. They iced the win at the line as Steve Mitchell hit 4-6 after Balfour took an intentional and Redmen coach Glen Fekula took a technical. Bears coach John Cleland said “we had foul trouble early and guys came off the bench and did the things they had to do. Our defence was the bottom line all year and tonight, we did it again.” Fekula said “we got into a phase where we wanted to throw the long cross-court pass and they stole it two or three times and they made us run around a lot. They got us out of our comfort zone.” Kummerfield to the Regina Leader-post “it doesn’t feel good. It’s not something I want to do again. To be in control and see it slip away right under your noses, it’s the worst. It’s just so close and then it’s gone, in a matter of minutes.” Kopach said “it’s quite a feeling of accomplishment. We were focused all year … We were never playing like we were going to lose. We were playing like we were going to win.” Kopach nailed a trey, twice drove for layups and then the ball with 39 seconds to play as the Bears rallied. Kopach said “we went through a period where it was scrappy and we weren’t running our offence. Our coach told us to settle down and gave us some plays to run. The whole game our shots weren’t falling. At the end, we were taking good shots and they were falling. It was a matter of the whole team staying focused and playing together.” Fekula said “we felt a little bit in control when you look at who they had left and who we had left. We thought we had more weapons. We had a pretty good feeling with four minutes left. They didn’t have a lot of offensive power left but you only need two or three baskets at that point. It’s too bad for the kids because they felt they had it right there and it was smashed away from them.”
