The Rockets full-court pressure forced a bushel of turnovers as they built a 37-14 lead at the half before backing off in the second half as they coasted to the easy win. “We normally press,” Rosemary coach David Blumell told the Lethbridge Herald. “It’s very hard for them not to press like we did in the second half.” Warner coach Cam Burr said “give them a lot of credit, their press gave us a hard time. We’ve seen zone presses before but we didn’t do a very good job. Their athleticism was good.” Reiko Matoba and Margo Unruh each scored 11 to pace the Rockets. The 6th-seeded Carbon Raiders clubbed the 3rd-seeded Thorsby Sabres 71-53 after leading 36-23 at the half. Leslie Rosadiuk led the Raiders with 34. Michelle Makowsky paced the Sabres with 27. The Sabres also included Heather McGregor.
The top-seeded Foremost Forettes crushed the 8th-seeded Fairview St. Thomas More Kodiaks 63-40 after leading 32-22 at the half. Shellie Dykshoorn led the Forettes with 21. Megan Cowie added 12. Janine Biegel paced the Kodiaks with 15. The Kodiaks also included Nadine Prybysh, Maureen Bechner.
In the last quarterfinal, the 5th-seeded Rosemary Rockets dumped the 4th-seeded Consort Stingers 69-51 as Margo Uneub scored 16 and Amy Forrest 14. The Stingers included Janne Davis.
In the semis, the top-seeded Foremost Falcons clocked the 5th-seeded Rosemary Rockets 81-51 after leading 42-35 at the half. Megan Cowie led the Falcons with 27. Shellie Dykshoorn added 17.
In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Stirling Lakers stomped the 6th-seeded Carbon Raiders 83-26 after leading 41-14 at the half. Beth Clawson paced the Lakers with 26. Leslie Rosadiuk led the Raider with 13.
In the bronze medal match, the Carbon Raiders edged the Rosemary Rockets 62-60 after leading 34-33 at the half. April Stewart led the Raiders with 23. Leslie Rosadiuk added 19 and Colleen Stojke 16. Linda Blumell paced the Rockets with 13. Amy Forrest added 11.
In the final, the 2nd-seeded Stirling Lakers defeated the top-seeded Foremost Forettes 56-48 to avenge a loss in the south zone finals. The Lakers led 18-11 early and although the Forettes rallied to a 22-21 lead, Stirling took a 30-23 lead into the lockers. Stirling coach Ingeborg Pot said “I know my kids can play defence, but I’ve never seen them play this together, this tenacious, this focused, all season. We’ve been focused before, but not as a whole unit. I got into foul trouble early, but my bench came through for me as well.” Forettes coach Glen Magneson said “it was pretty well everything I expected. We played four times this year and it’s 2-2 now. If we played again on Monday, we might win, or they might win. It’s close.” Beth Clawson led the Lakers with 15. Adele Erickson added 13. Carol Luca paced the Forettes with 19. Nancy Laqua added 8.
