In the final, the Fairview St. Thomas More Kodiaks defeated the Coalhurst Crusaders 61-54 “We’ve worked on a new offence all year but we never used it down here,” until the final, Kodiaks coach Dave Ballantyne told the Lethbridge Herald. “We were worried about their height, and they’re a good team, but we played good defence against them.” Fairview broke to a 14-7 lead but the Crusaders rallied to a 17-16 lead. The teams kept trading the lead until late in the half when an 8-0 run game the Kodiaks a 32-23 edge heading into the lockers. “I have to compliment them because they’re probably the best team that has played against our 1-3-1 (zone). They played it perfectly,” said Crusader coach Ken Gregus. “We’ve worked well with the 1-3-1. It got us through the zones and it got us here (finals) but they showed us it does have some weaknesses.” The Crusaders opened the second half with a 6-0 run and eventually knotted the score on Angela Denhoed’s perimeter shooting. “I thought Angela Denhoed came out and played a great game in her last game,” said Gregus “She shot extremely well and it was actually Angela who put us back in the ball game.” The teams traded leads six times in second half but with three minutes remaining Crusaders’ Lana Sprinkle fouled out just after a key baseline drive made it 71-67. “I think losing Lana Sprinkle with foul trouble put us back a bit. Because she’s a key in running the 1-3-1,” said Gregus. Kodiak Monique Chailler scored two of her 18 points from the free throw line with 1:50 to play to restore Fairview’s lead at 53-51. Sherri Fox’s power drive to the basket lifted the Kodiaks to a 57-54 lead with 50 seconds remaining and she salted away the win with a pair of free throws with 20 left. Bobbi-Jo Helle added 13 for the Kodiaks. Jenny May paced the Crusaders with 13. Debbie Hubbard added 12.
