During the season, schools in Edmonton play FIBA rules, while schools in other parts of the province play NCAA rules.
In the quarterfinals, held in Calgary, the top-seeded Calgary St. Mary’s Saints defeated the 8th-seeded Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Clipper Queens 50-32 (also reported as 50-34) as Elise Adolphe scored 13. Adolphe told the Calgary Herald “we’d hoped we get this far. We knew we had a lot of potential.” The Clipper Queens (coached by Doug Kempt) included Chris Peters, Sheila Skolrood, Pam Konynenbelt, Julie Harker, Ashleigh Houston, Georgie Sevcov, Sophi Hicken, Sabina Seitz, Melissa Kotkas and Elke Fauser.
The Lethbridge Catholic Central Cittens defeated the Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans 40-36 as Sherry Kropinkas scored 14, Linda Smith 10 and Margie Gal 10. Brenda Ives (Aves?) paced the Titans with 10. The Titans (coached by Evelyn Silk) also included Diane Hall, Sue Kelly, Karen Kumish.
The Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs dispatched the Grande Prairie St. Joseph’s Ceinahs 36-30 as Allison Phillpots scored 18. Ceinahs coach Patrick McDonald told the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune that “I just didn’t get them up the way they should have been. We came up flat. It’s one of those things. I have to take the blame. … There was a few things I could have done and I didn’t but I don’t know if it would have made a difference.” Ceinah Lisa Elsender picked up three quick fouls in the first minute and fouled out early in the second half. “She was too hper. Nothing was going right,” McDonald said. The Ceinahs (coached by Patrick McDonald, assistant Jan Stack) included Lisa Elsender, Lisette Boulet, Liz Walker, Heather Gorman, Susan Helwa, Beth Menzies, Joanne Gorman, Hope Keats, Christine Beaulieu, Karen Hesse, Dawn Hartman and Lori Wold.
In the last quarterfinal, the Edmonton Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds crushed the Grande Prairie Composite Totems 63-36. Lynne Kildaw paced the Totems with 19. Totems coach Jane Randles told the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune that ‘we were a little out of our league but we learned a lot.” The Totems (coached by Randles) also included Wendy Chugg, Kim Tuttle, Zebib Lidsekal, Maryanne Merrill, Taryn Pawliusky, Barb Weibmann, Amanda Jukes, Allison young, Rosemary lodge and Nancy Bosscha.
In the semis, the Lethbridge Catholic Central Cittens defeated the Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs 40-36 (also reported as 39-35) as Linda Smith scored 12 and Lorraine Beaudin 10.
In the other semi, the Calgary St. Mary’s Saints pounded the Edmonton Ross Shepherd Thunderbirds 64-31.
In the bronze medal match, the Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs clubbed the Edmonton Ross Shepherd Thunderbirds 68-37 as Jody Hasselfield scored 20. Debbie Snow paced the Thunderbirds with 13. The Thunderbirds (coached by x, assisted by Cathy McDonald) also included Jane Edwards.
In the final, the host Calgary St. Mary’s Saints defeated the Lethbridge Catholic Central Cittens 39-29 as Debbie Patterson scored 16. The Saints took an early 12-9 lead on three steals and runouts by Paterson. They led 12-9 after one quarter and 21-16 at the half, largely on steals for runouts. Patterson told the Calgary Herald “we didn’t play our best game. At times, we went into a relapse. We totally went into a mental relapse and just everything (let) go. We got a few points up and thought we could lay up but at this kind of tournament, you just can’t do that. … We always try to double-team their guards and at this level, they’re not expert ballhandlers.” Saints coach Arlene McGinn said “our shooting percentage was not as good but they didn’t give us the opportunities.” Linda Smith paced the Cittens with 12. Sherry Kropinak added 9. “We’re quite pleased with the performance,” Cittens coach Cal O’Brien told the Lethbridge Herald. “I don’t think a lot of people expected us to get to the final.”
