In opening game of the national draw, which required a $1,058 entry fee, host Windsor AKO thrashed the St. John’s Holy Cross Crusaders 120-51 by full court pressing the entire game. Windsor went on an 11-0 run early in second half to seal the victory. AKO shot 43-93 from the field, 32-40 from the line and out-rebounded the Crusaders 54-22. Fred Logan scored 17, Billy Todd 16, John Smith 14, Laurie Cahill 14, Bruce Norris 13, Pat Goggins 12, Sam Sasso 11, Pat McMahon 10, Mike Chalut 9 and Glen Ladouceur 4. Brian Murphy scored 23 to pace the Crusaders (coached by Jim Fitzpatrick). The Crusaders hit .256 from the field, 11-20 from the line. Matt McCarthy added 8, Wayne Stanford 6, Scurry 5, Roche 5 and Kirkland 4. Crusaders coach Jim Fitzpatrick did not chastise AKO for running up the score. “You can’t blame them. The way the tourney is set up, point total could mean the championship.” Windsor AKO’s 6-5 centre Al Warnock did not play in tourney because of an elbow injury. AKO coach Doug Cowan told the Windsor Star “how can you hold these guys down? You can’t send a sub in and tell him not to score.”
Windsor AKO defeated Calgary Mount Royal 103-84, taking an 8-2, and 15-4 lead, easily breaking the press that Cougars coach Jack Kenyon employed from the start. Bruce Norris scored 7 of Windsor’s first 15 points, and finished with 16. Fred Logan led AKO with 22, including 17 in the first half. John Smith added 14, Mike Chalut 12, Billy Todd 11, Laurie Cahill 9, Sam Sasso 8, Pat Goggins 5, Glen Ladocoeur 4 and Pat McMahon 2, while Mike Patrick was scoreless. Ron Feist paced the Cougars with 18. Dave Littlewood added 17, Doug Kempt 17, Don Hansen 16, Petersen 11, Belinski 4 and Smith 1.
Windsor AKO broke open a tight game with Manitoba in the second half and romped 87-67. AKO came out “smoking,” coach Doug Cowan told the Windsor Star. AKO had only led by two, 39-37 at the half. Fred Logan led Windsor with 27. Sam Sasso added 13, Bruce Norris 11, John Smith 9, Pat Goggins 9, Laurie Cahill 7, Mike Chalut 6 and Pat McMahon 5. Ron Waugh led the Junior Bisons with 16. Brian Eger added 16, Maskiew 10, Grafton 6, Grant 6, Mitchell 6, Wiebe 5 and Wolfe 2.
Chris Hall scored 28 to lead the University of Victoria past the University of Manitoba Junior Bisons 81-64. Mark Pratt added 19, Brent Mullin 14, Tim Reiger 9, Gord Hoshal 7 and Jack Yamaoka 4, while Rick Roberts and Fergie Andison were scoreless. Ron Waugh led Manitoba with 21. Brian Eger added 18, Don Maskiew 12, Murray Grafton 7, Roray Grant 4 and Bob Mitchell 2, while Jim Wolfe, Herb Wiebe, Charles Shapiro and Ben Rappo were scoreless.

The Bisons (coached by Don Hunter and managed by Grant Nazarko), included Charles Shiaro, Rick Partyko, Ben Rempel, Murray Grafton, Bob Mitchell, Roy Grant, Don Maskiew, Ron Waugh, Herb Wiebe, Brian Eger, Jim Wolfe and Hymie Fox.
Brent Mullin scored 30 and Chris Hall 20 in the University of Victoria Junior Vikings 94-46 pasting of Newfoundland St. John’s Holy Cross. Holy Cross included Brian Murphy, Frank Scurry, Phil Roche.
The University of Victoria Junior Vikes dispatched the Mount Royal Cougars 77-65 as Chris Hall scored 23, Tim Reiger 22, Gordon Hoshall 20, Fergie Andison 5, Brent Mullin 4 and Jack Yamaoka 3, while Mark Pratt and Rick Roberts were scoreless Don Hansen led the Cougars with 15. Doug Kempt added 14, Dave Littlewood 13, Ron Feist 12, Peter Petersen 5, Gary Smith 4 and Rod Belinski 2, while Dennis Acoose was scoreless. Victoria coach Gary Taylor told the Windsor Star “I wouldn’t say we played one of our best games tonight. I know we’re capable of handling the ball better. But their press was effective against us.” Mount Royal coach Jack Kenyon said “we had too many turnovers and were unable to put together enough momentum to catch them.”
Windsor defeated second place Victoria 89-74, after leading 43-38 at the half. John Smith, Bruce Norris and Pat McMahon’s outside shooting turned the tide as they went on a 9-2 run early in the second half. AKO hit 37-53 from the field and the end of the game was a parade to the foul line. Laurie Cahill scored 23 including 11-14 free throws, Sam Sasso 13, Mike Chalut 9, Fred Logan 13, Bruce Norris 10, Mike Chalut 9, Pat McMahon 6 and Pat Goggins 4. Chris hall led Victoria with 25. Brent Mullin added 12, Gordon Hushal 11, Tim Reiger 7, Pratt 7, Fergison Andison 5 and Jack Yamaoka 2. Victoria coach Gary Taylor told the Windsor Star that AKO had “too much speed and bench. They just keep coming at you.” Windsor coach Doug Cowan noted “this has to be the greatest thing that can ever happen to a fellow. These 12 fellows are the greatest. …they played and won three tough ball games, never once letting up. Sure, we were handicapped by a lack of height but we overcame that by going 110%. Did you ever see another AKO team with that much hustle and desire? … Chalut and Sasso are exciting ballplayers … the whole squad seems to get a lift when they’re on the floor. I’d have to say that Smith and Logan are our best two-way players. Logan deserves all the credit he can get … as the fellows respect him so much.” Tim Reiger, Jack Yamaoka and Brent Mullin all fouled out for the Vikes in the third quarter, leaving the 8-man squad severely depleted in the final frame.
