Hutton told the Hamilton Spectator that coach Dave Bartolotta said “go put them in.” Montreal led 71-64 but Quigley’s inserted Vic Popov into the line-up and he promptly hit buckets. Ray Delegarde added a pair of field goals and a pair of free throws, leading to Hutton’s winners. Quigley’s coach Dave Bartolotta told the Hamilton Spectator that “our full court press brought us back. I don’t know what to say about this club. They don’t know what it means to quit.”
Ray Delegarde led Hamilton with 19. Gregg Jackson added 16, Mike Hogg 12, Vic Popov 11, Bob Prowse 11, Barry Hutton 7 and Dan o”Hoski 4. Alan Hendewich led Montreal with 19. Bill Holt added 18, Peter Ryan 15 and Bob Whitney 10. The Orchids twice held 14 points leads. But four points by Barry Hutton in the final minutes gave Quigley’s the win as they rallied from a 14-point deficit in the final frame by shifting to full-court pressure.
The national finals were held at St. John’s, Newfoundland. In the opener, the hosts used tough defence to defeat Hamilton Quigley’s 51-45. St. John’s was paced by Brian Murphy’s 13 and Joe Wadden’s 13. Harry Husk added 8 while masterfully controlling the ball. The Quigley’s were led by Gregg Jackson’s 12. Brian Ashurst added 10 and Ray Delegarde 9. The Quigley’s were up 26-20 at the half, but St. John’s tough defence keyed the rally.
In Calgary’s 76-63 win over St. John’s Holy Cross, height proved the difference. Calgary was ahead 38-22 at the half. John Powell scored 17, Bill Magierowski 14, Gary Pruden 12 and Don Moulton 12. Brian Murphy paced Holy Cross with 12. Mike Gallivan added 12, Bren Dalton 11 and Joe Wadden 11.
Calgary Mount Royal defeated Hamilton Quigley’s 82-76 as Clark Sloan scored 19, John Powell 13, Gary Pruden 13 and Bill Magierowski 13. Calgary shot 24-36, while Quigley’s was 25-36. For Hamilton, Gregg Jackson scored 25 and Ray Delegarde 15. The game was tied at 44 at the half. Calgary took command in the second half, building a double-digit lead and then maintaining a 6-10 point through the half. The Quigleys (coached by Dave Bartolotta) included Barry Hutton, Dan O’Hoski, Ian Joliffe, Ray Delegarde, Vic Popov, Bob Prowse, Brian Ashurst, Gregg Jackson, Tony Milne and Mike Hogg.
