In the quarterfinals, the top-seeded Foremost Falcons stuffed the 8th-seeded Eckville Aces 86-60 after leading 53-30 at the half. Jon Nibler paced the Falcons with 18. Cole Dixson added 16. Stewart Smith led the Aces with 21. The Aces also included Aaron Smith, Mike Landry, Jordon Lewis.
The 4th-seeded Acme Redmen dumped the 5th-seeded Fairview St. Thomas More Kodiaks 73-66 in overtime as Robert Hunter scored 33 and Paul Wiebe 13. Grant Knoppers led the Kodiaks with 23. The score was knotted at 62 after regulation play. The Kodiaks also included Kent Ruether.
The 2nd-seeded Stirling Lakers edged the 7th-seeded Rosemary Rockets 83-82 as Jason Hill hit a pair of free throws with 21 seconds to play. The Rockets led 51-38 at the half but the Lakers rallied to take their first lead with six minutes to play. Hill paced the Lakers with 24. Billy-Ken Eaves added 20. Polo Sprunger led the Rockets with 20. The Rockets also included Rudy Sprunger.
In the last quarterfinal, the 6th-seeded Olds Koinonia Christian Royals stunned the 3rd-seeded Edmonton Parkland Immanuel Christian Penguins 72-59 after leading 37-27 at the half. David Voss paced the Royals with 22. Ryan Tolsma led the Penguins with 16. The Penguins also included Shawn Dykstra, Brad Van Raalte.
In the semis, the top-seeded Foremost Falcons clipped the 4th-seeded Acme Redmen 69-55 after leading 31-27 at the half. Foremost opened the second half with a 7-0 run and easily held off Redmen bids to rally. “It was really tough, we had trouble adjusting early because they changed defences,” said Foremost coach Ray Rumpel. “I was happy because the kids kept working hard. The big key was our depth. We were able to use a few more guys and spread some fouls around when they couldn’t.” Cole Dixson paced the Falcons with 17. Jon Nibler added 15, Shaun Peterson 12 and Brent Magneson 11. Paul Wiebe led the Redmen with 20. Craig Rieger added 15.
In the other semi, the 6th-seeded Olds Koinonia Christian Royals stunned the 2nd-seeded Stirling Lakers 88-54 after leading 41-24 at the half. David Voss paced the Royals with 26, including 5 treys. Billy-Ken Eaves led the Lakers with 17.
In the bronze medal match, the Acme Redmen stomped the Stirling Lakers 67-49 after leading 34-23 at the half. Robert Hunter led the Redmen with 19. Billy Ken Eaves led the Lakers with 15. Tyler Clawson added 14. The Lakers (coached by Darren Mazutinec) also included Jason Hill, Jared Edwards, Mike Duncombe.
In the final, the top-seeded Foremost Falcons stomped the 6th-seeded Olds Koinonia Christian Royals 93-73. The Falcons led 47-31 at the half and romped. Cole Dixson paced the Falcons with 25. Jon Nibler added 24, Brent Magneson 19 and Shaun Peterson 13. David Voss paced the Royals with 32. Bryon Hartzer added 13 and Roger Sayer 11. “It’s a big win for everybody who has ever played at Foremost,” said Falcons coach Ray Rumpel. “It went the way we wanted it to. After last year, losing in the final, it was a trip all year long just to get here. I really thought once we got here, the guys just sort of took over. It was what they wanted and they got it done. The two players that were key were Cole and Jon, the grade 12’s. I didn’t feel they were going to let us lose.”
