In the opening game of the national championships, held in Victoria, Calgary Mount Royal JC thrashed Hamilton Quigley’s 81-63. The Cougars opened with a 17-2 run as their transition game caught Quigley’s flatfooted. Calgary led 36-24 at the half and was never threatened. Wayne Haldaine paced Mount Royal with 17. Pete Jeffrey added 14, Dan Quance 14, Ashley Court 13, Skip Cronck 12, Don Andrews 5, Ken Lockwood 2, Bill Newcombe 2 and Phil Stoochnoff 2, while Dick Mather was scoreless. Daryl Bowman led Hamilton with 19. Jim Hajas added 13, Carl Glatt 12, Vic Vinerskis 8, Peter Coulen 6 and Peter Dalla Riva 5, while Jim Connor, Bob Wiley, Bruce Mowat and John Kennedy were scoreless. Hamilton coach Wes Hicks told the Hamilton Spectator that “Calgary took the best part of our game away from us. That was the fastbreak. And they did that by controlling the backboards.” The dominance forced the Quigley’s into a zone.

The University of British Columbia Jayvees dusted the Fredericton Elms 82-57 by dominating the boards. “They’re a good team,” Fredericton coach Gary Smith told Canadian Press. “We talked about ways of combating their press, but our execution wasn’t sharp.” Smith his troops were also impacted by having to sleep at Toronto airport a night earlier because of a blizzard. UBC coach Norm Watt said “they have two fine ballplayers, Gary Crandelmire and David Nutbrown.” Bob Molinski led B.C. with 18, along with 13 boards. Sam Vandermeulen added 14, Joe Kainer 11, Dave Rice 11, Ken Kern 10, before injuring his ankle, Phil Langley 8, Reinhardt Blumenscheit 7 and Glen Carter 3, while Alan Quinn was scoreless. Crandelmire led Fredericton with 18. Dave Nutbrown added 12, Ron White 12, Bob Bonnell 8, Ron Mitton 3 and Mason Coates 1, while Murray Watt and Bill Saunders were scoreless. Elms coach Gary Smith told the Vancouver Sun that “every time they had to take someone off, the guy who replaced him was better. How long can they keep that up?”

The Victoria Chinooks thrashed Halifax All-Saints 72-50 after leading 40-19 at the half. Barney Spaven and Ken Jackson each scored 16 for the Chinooks. Ron Bowker added 15, Barry Burch 5, Ron Stubbings 4, Don Frampton 4, Doug Gregory 4, Rick Humber 3, Brian McIntyre 2 and Brian Brumwell 2. Irving Cohen led All-Saints with 23. Jim Lovett added 10, Leigh Ford 10, Peter Morrison 4 and Louie Dixon 3, while Rod McKenzie, Don Homas, Dave McLellan and Allen Waye were scoreless.

In round two, Hamilton Quigley’s eliminated the Fredericton Elms 79-68. The Elms folded in the last three minutes of play. They’d led 45-40 at the half but tired, having been reduced to seven players when Ronald Mitton fractured his left ankle during their 82-57 loss to UBC. Vinerskis led Hamilton with 24. Bowman added 17, Hajas 12, Glatt 10, Peter Coulan 10 and Peter Dalla Riva 6, while Connor, Mowatt, Wiley and Kennedy were scoreless. Hamilton coach Wes Hicks told the Hamilton Spectator that “we had to slow down Fredericton’s attack. With that first timeout, I called for a man-to-man defence. That slowed the Elms tempo. Then we switched to the halfcourt press. That finished Fredericton.” Grandelmire led the Elms with 23. Nutbrown added 15, Bonnell 13, White 10, Coates 4 and Saunders 3, while Watt was scoreless.

The British Columbia Jayvees defeated the Calgary Mount Royal Cougars 64-59. The Cougars led 14-2 early but tired in the second half. Joe Kainer paced the Jayvees with 19. Sam Vandermeulen added 18, along with 10 boards, Dave Rice 11, along with 11 boards, Langley 10, Bob Molinski 4, along with 11 boards, and Blumenscheit 2, while Carter, Kern and Quinn were scoreless. Wayne Haldane paced the Cougars with 31. Dan Quance added 11, Cronck 11, Ashley Court 2, Stoochnoff 2 and Don Andrews 2, while Newcombe, Matner, Jeffrey and Loughwood were scoreless. Jayvees coach Norm Watt told the Vancouver Sun that “we couldn’t really work the press full-out when we were behind. But once we got close, it was different. Then we really put it on and when we got ahead, it forced them to come out of their zone defence and we had them.” Cougars coach Jack Kenyon told Canadian Press that nerves and “foolish mistakes” undid his troops, along with the absence of Ashley Court, who was sidelines by the flu.

The Victoria Chinooks edged the Montreal Orchids (who’d drawn a bye in the opening round) 48-42 despite shooting just 5% from the floor in the first half. The Chinooks tooked their first lead when Ron Bowker hit a free throw to make it 43-42. Ken Jackson added three free throws and Bowker two more as Victoria took command. Ken Jackson led Victoria with 17. Ron Bowker added 16, Gregory 7, Spaven 6 and Frampton 2, while Stubbins, McIntyre, Humber, Turner, Brumwell and Burch were scoreless. Mischook led the Orchids with 11. Holt added 9, Morash 7, Atkinson 7, Yashan 3, Alleyne 2, Kuncevicious 2 and Jeff Van Hartlesveldt 1, while Willis, Wells and Wahn were scoreless.

In round three, the Montreal Orchids eliminated Hamilton Quigley’s from title consideration 75-69. The Orchids trailed 45-36 at the half but rookie Hudson Alleyne was inserted into the line-up and hit four quick buckets to completely shift momentum and launch the Orchids en route to their victory. Mischook paced the Orchids with 25. Holt added 17, Atkinson 10, Alleyne 10, Kuncevicious 5, Morash 5 and Van Haretlesveldt 3, while Willis and Yashan were scoreless. Darrell Bowman led Hamilton (coach Wes Hicks, manager Ray Jones) with 21. Peter Dalla Riva added 11, Vic Vinerskis 10, Carl Glatt 8, Pete Coulen 7, Jim Hajas 6 and Jim Conner 6, while Bruce Mowat, Bob Wylie and John Kennedy were scoreless.

The Calgary Mount Royal Cougars eliminated Halifax All-Saints 104-67. Dan Quance led the Cougars with 21. Skip Cronck added 18, Wayne Haldane 17, Court 15, Stoochnoff 10, Jeffrey 8, Andrews 6, Mather 4, Lockwood 3 and Newcome 2. Irving Cohen led Halifax with 32, Louie Dixon 23, Ford 7, Jim Lovett 2, Peter Morrison 2 and McLellan 1, while Mackenzie, Homans and Wave were scoreless. Irving Cohen paced Halifax with 32. “In the East, the game is offence,” lamented Halifax coach Rev. Blair Dixon to Canadian Press. “It’s offence at nearly every level.”

The British Columbia Jayvees pounded the Victoria Chinooks 53-34. The Jayvees zone press befuddled the Chinooks. Ken Kern led the Jayvees with 14. Vandermeulen added 12, Langley 9, Rice 7, Kainer 6, Blumenscheit 4 and Molinski 3, while Carter and Quinn were scoreless. Jayvees coach Norm Watt told the Vancouver Sun that Kern “is an amazing character. His ankle is taped so much it must feel like he’s wearing a cast but he says it’s alright and he goes out and gets 14 points. The Jayvees broke to a 10-1 lead and romped. Jackson led Victoria with 12. Brumwell added 10, Frampton 6, Turner 4 and Bowker 2, while Stubbins, MacIntyre, Humber, Burch, Spaven and Gregory were scoreless.

In round four, the Calgary Mount Royal Cougars eliminated the Montreal Orchids 77-61 as Court scored 21, Quance 15, Cronck 11, Jeffrey 9, Haldane 9, Andrews 7, Lockwood 3 and Mather 2, while Stoochnoff and Newcombe were scoreless. Ray Mischook scored 24 to pace the Orchids (coached by Danny Kanath). Alleyne added 14, Atkinson 12, Morash 7, Holt 2 and Kuncevicious 2, while Willis, Yashan and Harvesveldt were scoreless.

       In the semis, Victoria Chinooks eliminated the Calgary Mount Royal Cougars 77-59. Cougars coach Jack Kenyon told Canadian Press that “we lost it on defence. We played man to man all season but tonight we looked as if we never played it before.” The Cougars shot just .250 from the floor, while Victoria was .550. Doug Gregory’s defence on Ashley Court proved the difference. Ken Jackson led Victoria with 23. Don Frampton added 17, Ron Bowker 17, Gregory 7, along with 9 boards, Spaven 7 and Brumwall 6, while Stubbings, McIntyre, Humber, Burch and Turner were scoreless. Wayne Haldane led the Cougars (coached by Jack Kenyon) with 20. Danny Quance added 15, Pete Jeffery 10, Phil Stoochnoff 4, Skip Cronck 4, Bill Newcombe 3 and Ashley Court 3, while Dick Mather, Ken Lockwood and Don Andrews were scoreless.

       In the final, the UBC Jayvees defeated the Victoria Chinooks 58-48. UBC took a 32-22 half-time lead and opened the second half with a 7-0 run. The outcome was never in doubt. Sam Vandermuelen scored 19 to paced the Jaycees. Dave Rice added 14, Ken Kern 11, Kainer 6, Blumenscheit 3, Molinski 2, Langley 2 and Carter 1, while Quinn was scoreless. Ron Bowker led the Chinooks with 18. Ken Jackson added 15, Gregory 6, Brumwell 4, Spaven 3 and Frampton 2, while Stubbings, McIntyre, Humber, Burch and Turner were scoreless. Both UBC coach Norm Watt and Victoria coach Ollie Goldsmith told Canadian Press that the Jayvees depth proved the difference. “Kern wasn’t even one of my starts at the start of the season,” said Watt. “But after a midseason exhibition with Seattle University, Ken came along in tremendous fashion.” The Jayvees hit 22-53 (.410) from the floor, while the Chinooks hit 19-55 (.340)
