In the final, the Lundbreck Livingstone Sabres defeated the Stirling Lakers 75-61 to capture their third consecutive title and fourth in five years. It was the Lakers third consecutive title loss. “They’re coming closer every year,” said Lundbreck coach Roger McAdam. “We sometimes have trouble finding our intensity for some games, but with Stirling, the guys really get up for it. … They’ve got the desire. They’ve been bridesmaids for a few years and they wanted it really bad, and it showed. They went after the ball for a good portion of the game a lot more than we did.” Lundbreck led 29-27 at the half but the perimeter-oriented Lakers took a 47-41 lead with 13 minutes to play. The Sabres, though, kept pounding the ball inside and dominated the boards, though it wasn’t a strong point all season. “We’ve relied on our height instead of boxing out, so I was glad to see the guys were putting a little bit extra effort into it.” McAdam said the Sabres started out with a 1-3-1 zone defence aimed at controlling the Lakers’ perimeter shooting, but when it failed to do the trick, Lundbreck switched to man-to-man. MacAdam said Brent Lamb did a stellar defensive job on Laker Shane Still. Point guard Kent McCulloch paced the Sabres with 32. “Kent always comes through with his strong game,” said McAdam. Devon Vollman added 22 for Livingstone. Lamb and Gerald Erickson each scored 11. Ryan Pitcher paced the Lakers with 20. Mason Barton added 13 and Shane Still 10.
