In the quarterfinals, held in Lundbreck, the host Livingstone Sabres stomped the Calgary Christian Cougars 99-54 as Nigel Cervo scored 23, Mike Ozar 15, Jason McGuire 14 and Arden Wiebe 13. Lane Kilbreath led the Cougars with 20. Robert Nedderlof added 11.
The Coalhurst Trojans clocked the Vegreville St. Mary’s Saints 118-86 as Robert Leverick scored 27, Daniel Zaychuk 23 and Jason Leverick 22. Derek Steil led the Saints with 29. Todd McGuaig added 22.
The Bashaw Rebels clocked the Fox Creek Flames 86-65 as Rob Wresler scored 28 and Lyle Adams 20. Jason Tillatouagh paced the Flames with 22. Scott Edwards added 12.
In the last quarterfinal, the Crossfield Trojans clipped the Westlock St. Mary’s Sharks 67-61.
In the semis, the Lundbreck Livingston Sabres defeated x.
In the other semi, the Coalhurst Trojans dispatched x.
In the bronze medal match, the Crossfield Trojans edged the Bashaw Rebels 69-68 as Bob Longway scored 24. Rob Resler led the Barons with 20.
In the final, the Lundbreck Livingstone Sabres defeated the Coalhurst Trojans 83-74. It was the fourth time the Trojans and the Sabres had met during the season, which each winning twice. “We were going for an all-south final,” said Sabre coach Arlin Olson. “It showed the south dominance.” The Sabres looked to fastbreak, while the Trojans looked to pound the ball inside to forward Danneil Zaychuk as Livingstone built a 12-7 lead. “We know each other, and to beat them we had to stop their inside game,” said Olson. Although Trojan Dean Hawkins soon picked up his third foul, Jason Allison and Robert Leverick rallied Coalhurst to a 20-20 tie. But Lundbreck kept pressing the tempo, led by guard Arden Wiebe, and took a 43-40 lead into the lockers. The Sabres continued to score easy baskets on Trojan turnovers was they took a 55-47 lead in the second half. The Trojans rallied no closer than 57-53. The Sabres took command when reserve Mark Edwards hit the floor and scrapped for loose balls and offensive boards. “That turned the whole tide right in our favor,” said Olson. Lundbreck soon led 63-54. With Edwards and James Lynch-Staunton repeatedly notching putback rebounds, the outcome was never in doubt. “We started to get a lot of tap-backs in the second half,” said Olson. “That made the difference.” Arden Wiebe led the Sabres with 25. Lynch-Staunton and Edwards each added 12. Jason Leverick led the Trojans with 22.
