In the quarterfinals, held in Rosemary, the Coalhurst Trojans stomped the Fairview St. Thomas More Kodiaks 63-31 as Peter DeLauw scored 19, Darren Engel 15 and Kevin Lewis 11. Shawn Luken led the Kodiaks with 10.
The Vegreville St. Martin’s Cougars defeated the Bentley Panthers x-x. The Panthers included Lorne Fraser, Hans Skjonsberg, Shane Juuti, Doug Wilson.
The Ryley Rebels defeated the Boyle Huskies x-x
In the last quarterfinal, the Acme Redmen defeated the Grassy Lake Chamberlain Panthers x-x.
In the semis, the Coalhurst Trojans dumped the Vegreville St. Martin’s Cougars 74-47 as Ken Janos scored 26, Peter DeLauw 15 and Roger Vanderlinden 10. Scott Wilde led the Cougars with 15. Steven Clicrenshynski added 14. The Trojans led 33-25 at the half.
In the other semi, the Acme Redmen defeated the Ryley Rebels x-x.
In the bronze medal match, the Ryley Rebels defeated the Vegreville St. Martin’s Cougars x-x.
In the final, the Coalhurst Trojans defeated the Acme Redmen 51-38 as Peter DeLauw scored 18, Darren Engel 14 and Ken Janos 13. The Trojans led 22-18 at the half. Dean Penner paced the Redmen with 12. Alfred Neufeld added 10. “The main thing was we put three good games together,” said Coalhurst coach DeWayne Duce told the Lethbridge Herald. “We continued on with what we did in zones. That was the whole thing, consistency. …. (Posts) Kenny (Janos) and Darren (Engel) really did a job this year.” With the two-post offence, the Trojans typically got foes in foul trouble. Duce said “when these boys were in Grade 9 and 10, they didn’t win. In two years to go from that to winning provincials is really something. You can tell these kids have really worked.”
