In the quarterfinals, held in Coalhurst, the Calgary Christian Cougars dumped the host Coalhurst Trojans 55-49. The Cougars led 27-21 at the half. The Trojans led 37-34 after three quarters. Stan Hielema paced the Cougars with 19. Hielema told the Lethbridge Herald that the Trojans 1-2-2 zone left him open on the baseline. “Defensively, we meant to cut down Scott Stanley. We put one guy in front and one guy on his back.” Still, Stanley scored 30. Trojans coach Dewayne Duce said the defensive scheme kept his troops out of the paint. The Trojans also included Roger Vander Linden, Peter Delauw, Terry LaFramboise.

        The Ashmont Falcons clipped the Kinuso Trojans 67-38. The Falcons, who’d all gotten brush cuts prior to the tournament to bring themselves luck, led 41-15 at the half. Jim Wegren paced the Falcons with 18. Mike Auger led the Trojans with 13.

        The Westlock Sharks clipped the Provost Saints 60-52 as Denis Kennedy scored 20 and James Lecky 16. Lome Paulgaard led the Saints with 15.

        In the last quarterfinal, the Rosemary Rockets stomped the Eckville Aces 90-33 after leading 46-14 at the half. Cody Tillack paced the Rockets with 15. Martin Wiebe added 14, Norton Allan 12 and Steven Lepp 12. Warren Schultz paced the Aces with 9. The Aces also included Grant Fisher.

        In the semis, the Calgary Christian Cougars clipped the Rosemary Rockets 55-42.

        In the other semi, the Ashmont Falcons stomped the Westlock Sharks 69-28.

        In the bronze medal match, the Rosemary Rockets defeated the Westlock Sharks 55-50 as Norton Allan scored 22. Denis Kennedy led the Sharks with 13.

        In the final, the Calgary Christian Cougars defeated the Ashmont Falcons 79-48 to win their second provincial title in three years. “The team only loses one or possibly two players next year and will move into 2A competition next season which I think they’re ready for,” Wamsteeker said. “This championship was very much comparable to the first. The first was nice, but it was after I took over a team which was built by another coach — this team was built and developed by Boyd (assistant Numi) and I since Grade 10.” Howie McCollister paced the Cougars with 18. Lyle Kroeker added 14 and Rick Pease 14. Ronald Sundt led the Falcons with 20, while 6-11 post Jim Wegren scored 17. The Cougars led 44-27 at the half.
