In the quarterfinals, held in Nobleford, the New Norway Spartans clipped the Wanham Wildcats 50-40. The Spartans led 12-9 after one quarter. The Wildcats led 19-17 at the half and 35-29 after three quarters. James Saby paced the Spartans with 14. Barry Olsen added 10. Rodney Heitrich led the Wildcats with 16. Craig Sather added 13. The Wildcats (coached by Ray Waters) also included Greg Dick, Don Keller, Paul Reum, Doug Zamorsky.
The Foremost Falcons defeated the Westlock St. Mary’s Sharks x-x. The Sharks led 23-12 after one quarter and 32-28 at the half. The Falcons led 40-39 after three quarters. Bob Paopst paced the Falcons with 19. Mark Kabayama added 11.
The Calgary Christian Cougars dusted the Vermilion St. Jerome’s Spartans 67-52. The Cougars trailed midway through the second quarter when coach Leroy Wamsteeker was informed that his wife and brother-in-law had been involved in a traffic accident at the end of town. He rushed to the hospital (both were okay), while the Cougars exploded for 10 unanswered points to take a 28-26 lead at the half. Lester Jager paced the Cougars with 24. Albert Wagenaar added 12 and Martin Folkerts 10. Daryl Southwick led the Spartans with 18. Kieran McCormick added 10.
In the last quarterfinal, the Coalhurst Trojans stomped the Eckville Aces 80-31. The Trojans broke to a 25-4 first quarter lead and romped, leading 36-13 at the half and 56-19 after three quarters. “The guys came out running,” said Coalhurst coach Dewayne Duce. “They just literally broke the team to pieces with the run. We were breaking out some times with three men. The front three men on the zone. Personally. I’ve never seen them run that way.” Gary Vander Linden paced the Trojans with 12. Scott Stanley added 11, Rob Petersen 10 and Peter De Lauw 10. Howard Kirbyson led the Aces with 8. Richard Denis added 7. “With the lead we had, I was able to substitute freely.” said Duce, “and the guys on the bench came up quite well. I’m sure my JV boys scored just as much as the starters. (Gordon) Cook played a good game defensively. He was really hyped tonight. And we got a good game from Gary VanderLinden. And out of the guards. They controlled the ball.”
In the semis, the Calgary Christian Cougars defeated the Coalhurst Trojans 58-41 as Albert Wagenaar scored 20 and Martin Folkerts 13. Rob Petersen led the Trojans with 23. The Cougars led 27-20 at the half.
In the other semi, the Foremost Falcons dumped the New Norway Spartans 52-41 as Duncan Russell scored 12. Bill Poapst added 11 and Mark Kabayama 11. The Falcons led 25-10 at the half. Barry Olsen paced the Spartans with 12. James Saby added 11.
In the bronze medal match, the Coalhurst Trojans defeated the New Norway Spartans 59-40 as Gary Vander Linden scored 18. The Trojans led 31-17 at the half. Gordon Cook added 11. Barry Olsen paced the Spartans with 16.
In the final, the Calgary Christian Cougars defeated the Foremost Falcons 50-45 as Albert Wagenaar scored 15, Mike Jeffers 12 and Martin Folkerts 11. Jeffers hit eight in the second half. “He was certainly hot at the start,” said Calgary coach Leroy Wamsteeker. “He got a few key baskets in the second half.” Bill Poapst led the Falcons with 15. Mark Kabayma added 13. Foremost led 12-10 after one quarter. The Cougars led 17-16 at the half and 33-23 after three quarters. “They were a little tougher underneath the boards than a few teams we’ve played this year.” Wamsteeker said. “We came out a little bit cold in the first half, but then the guys came out and got a few key boards and hit a few key shots. I think our experience came through for us.”
