By association practice, four teams were ranked at provincials. The remaining qualifiers’ names were thrown into a hat and drawn into the quarterfinal matchups.
In the quarterfinals, held in Red Deer, the 3rd-seeded Pincher Creek Matthew Halton Hawks dumped the Red Deer River Glen Royals 81-71 as Tim Bensler scored 20, Dave Benson 19 and Chad Kunkel 10. Jeff Moker paced the Hawks with 24. Kalvin Cruickshank added 14, Kevin Hjertaas 13 and Stewart Ricker 10. The Hawks also included Tyler Mattheis, Paul Guse, Steve Webster. Hawks coach Kelvin Kado told the Red Deer Advocate that “our experience really helped us in the long run. Our big guys went in and got some important rebounds. … The officiating got out of hand both ways. But you can live with that.” River Glen coach Dale Henderson said “I was ecstatic with the way we played. We had a great second half. It makes the whole season worthwhile.” River Glen’s 6-6 post Tyler Matthiew fouled out early in the second half. Cruickshank said “we had them worried. They weren’t expecting too much from us and we surprised them. If Tyler had stayed in the game, he might have made the difference.”
The 2nd-seeded Devon John Maland Wildcats clubbed the Fairview Cobras 91-70 as Randy Northrop scored 25 and Travis Dufresne 22. Tyson Davy paced the Cobras with 16. Ashley Webster added 11 and Paul Fraser 11. The Cobras also included Richie Fix.
The top-seeded Calgary Chestermere Cowboys crushed the Vegreville Vagabonds 78-57 as Brian Hunter scored 21, Gord Rothnie 11, Kory Taylor 10 and Neil Karl 10. Brad Mills paced the Vagabonds with 20.
In the last quarterfinal, the 4th-seeded Rocky Mountain House/Condor David Thompson Voyageurs stuff the Edmonton Maurice Lavallee Jaguars 89-58 as Pat Lutz scored 29 and Kent Smith 16. Uriel Demeau paced the Jaguars with 16. Michel Larve added 14 and Laurier Bussiere 12. Voyageurs coach Dale Boychuk told the Red Deer Advocate that “you never know how that first game is going to go. Defensively, we did a few things (differently) against them. Offensively, we just did our own thing.”
In the semis, the Devon John Maland Wildcats defeated the Pincher Creek Matthew Halton Hawks 88-63. “Devon just beat us up on the boards. They were a big, very physical team and we were outmuscled,” Hawks coach Bryan Mackenzie told the Lethbridge Herald. Tim Bensler led the Hawks with 17. Paul Whipple added 12 and David Benson 10.
In the other semi, the Calgary Chestermere Cowboys defeated the Rocky Mountain House/Condor David Thompson Voyageurs 90-81.
In the bronze medal match, the Pincher Creek Matthew Halton Hawks clipped the Rocky Mountain House David Thompson Voyageurs 92-81 as Tim Bensler scored 24, Dave Benson 20 and Paul Whipple 19. Eric Nijenhuis paced the Voyageurs with 16. Ken Smith added 14, Matt Hoven 11, Pat Lutz 10 and Chris Ketchum 10. The Voyageurs also included Pat Lutz, Mark Szymanski Nijenhuis, Mike Judd, Aaron Doyle. told the Red Deer Advocate that “we felt we had a shot at winning the championship. We worked very hard to get to provincials and we weren’t happy with our placing. But we were satisfied with our effort.
In the final, the Devon John Maland Wildcats defeated the Calgary Chestermere Cowboys 73-67 as Randy Northrop scored 22. Brian Hunter paced Chestermere with 27. Wildcats coach Gary Frost told the Red Deer Advocate that “our veterans came through really well. They played really smart when they got into foul trouble. … We got a little flat when we had to take the older guys out. The young guys played great but they didn’t give us the offensive we needed.”
