In the final, the Picture Butte Sugar Kings defeated the Rimbey Spartans 78-54 as Murray Hanna scored 29 and Cal Sucher 14 to earn their fourth title in six years. Picture Butte completed a boys and girls double. “We had a super third quarter,” Sugar Kings coach George Hanna told the Lethbridge Herald. “We led 34-25 at half-time, but in the third quarter, we went ahead 58-38. We controlled the boards, too, Arnie dominated their big man. Cal Sucher probably had the best three games I’ve ever seen him play, and Murray had two excellent games — I don’t know how many assists he had with those 29 points. But the fact was that all the boys played well in that final game. It’s funny, but we seem to play better against a man-to-man defence instead of a zone, and Rimbey played us man-to-man. The kids really played well. We had total control of the game.” Picture Butte opened the second half with a 13-0 run to take command. Rod Palm paced the Spartans with 18. Gordon Melis added 8 and Ken Buist 8. Spartans coach Duncan Prescott told the Red Deer Advocate that the Sugar Kings “played like they’d been waiting since last March for this game. You can’t take a thing away from them. … They did a good job on Rod (Palm). They rushed him all might, made him put up his shots before he was ready.”
