In the quarterfinals, held in Rimbey, the Picture Butte Sugar Kings clubbed the Edmonton Concordia College Mustangs 55-44. The score was knotted at 22 at the half. Terry Hanna paced the Sugar Kings with 18. Murray Hughes and Kevin Sauer each added 12, Brian Heninger 8 and Marvin Bebek 7. Joshua Borger led the Mustangs with 26. Robert Coon added 6. The Mustangs also included John Ryan, Doug Holtby.
The Rimbey Spartans torched the Grande Prairie St. Joseph’s Celtics 85-42 as Wayne Green scored 34, Doug Reiser 21 and Gary McElroy 18. Spartans coach Duncan Prescott told the Red Deer Advocate that “I’m kind of scared. This is by far the best we have played all season and we’ve been building up to this. I just hope we continue to go this way. But tomorrow is another day and maybe we should have saved some of those points.” The Spartans led 16-10 after one quarter and 47-22 at the half. John Savage led the Celtics with 12. Rob Lessoway added 8, Gerald O’Reilly 8 and Larry Colgan 7. The Celtics (coached by Patrick McDonald, manager Maureen Wild) also included Merv Crouse, Richard Schmiechowski, Dan Gorman, John Savage, Martin Pardell and Bruce McGee.
The Kathryn-Beiseker Vikings pouned the Elk Point F.G. Miller Crusaders 44-24 after holding the Crusaders scoreless until midway through the second quarter. The Vikings led 6-0, 19-9 and 31-10 at the quarters. Henry Sherman paced the Vikings with 12. Godfrey Huybreghts added 10 and Ron Matheny 9. Richard Poitrae paced the Crauders with 8. Dave Mistrel added 7. The Crusaders also included Gerald Krankowski.
In the last quarterfinal, the Bow Island Senator Gershaw Gators edged the Warburg Whips 44-40 after leading 25-12 at the half. A pair of free throws by Larry Onody with 19 seconds to play iced the win. Randy Cooper led the Gators with 20. Larry Onody added 12. Lyle Cunningham paced the Whips with 10. Vince Kwiatkowski added 10.
In the semis, the Picture Butte Sugar Kings clipped the Rimbey Spartans 62-52 after leading 40-18 at the half. Terry Hanna paced the Sugar Kings with 22. Murray Hughes added 18 and Kevin sauer 14. Gary McElroy paced the Spartans with 22. Doug Reiser added 13 and Wayne Green 7.
In the other semi, the Bow Island Senator Gershaw Gators defeated the Kathryn-Beiseker Bandits 39-32 as Larry Onody scored 17, Blair Kultgen 11 and Randy Cooper 7. Bob Matheny led the Bandits with 18. Ron Matheny added 2.
In the bronze medal match, the Kathryn-Beiseker Vikings dispatched the Rimbey Spartans 58-46 as Ron Matheny scored 16, Bob Matheny 15 and Dereck Minor 14. The Vikings led 30-13 at the half. Doug Reiser paced the Spartans with 16. Dale Barr added 8 and Gary McElroy 7. The Spartans also included Wayne Green, Gordon Bryanton, Murray Loyer, Murray Koyck?.
In the final, the Picture Butte Sugar Kings defeated the Bow Island Senator Gershaw Gators 60-27 as tournament MVP Terry Hanna scored 18, Murray Hughes 11, Kevin Sauer 10 and Marvin Bebek 8. Randy Cooper paced the Gators with 10. Larry Onody added 6. The Sugar Kings led 12-11, 26-19 and 54-22 at the quarters. The Sugar Kings finished (25-2) on the season.
