In the opening round, held in Grande Prairie for schools with enrolments between 150 and 750, Vermilion edged the Stettler William E. Hays Wildcats 51-48. Colin Kuffler paced the Wildcats with 15. Larry Watson added 10. The Wildcats, who played without star Randy Shiffner, sidelined by injury, also included Duncan Wells, Bill Blomquist, Colin Kuffler, Steve McNight, Bruce Oro.
In the quarterfinals, the Sherwood Park Salisbury Sabres clipped the Medicine Hat Crescent Heights Drifters 65-34. The Drifters (coached by Alex McNaught) included Billy Holden, John Sutter, Glen Irwin, Reg Hashizume, Gary Schmale.
The Taber St. Mary’s Celtics defeated the Grande Prairie Schooners (now the Totems) 56-38. The Schooners (coached by Len Luders, manager Terry McKinley) included John Stiles, Brian Richter, Clarence Breitkreutz, Lloyd Steeves, Allen Randell, Paul Oullette, Alex Wales, Leonard Dunn, Greg Watson, Ron Miller and Gary Merritt.
The Drumheller Dynamos dispatched the Edmonton Austin O’Brien Crusaders 59-53. The Crusaders included Rick Tominuk.
In the last quarterfinal, the Castor Gus Wetter Raiders defeated Vermilion 54-42.
In the semis, the Sherwood Park Salisbury Sabres clubbed the Taber St. Mary’s Celtics 65-34.
In the other semi, the Castor Gus Wetter Raiders dispatched the Drumheller Dynamos 52-42.
In the bronze medal match, the Taber St. Mary’s Celtics nipped the Drumheller Dynamos 52-48.
In the final, the Sherwood Park Salisbury Sabres defeated the Castor Gus Wetter Raiders 54-35 as Raoen scored 23, Forester 17, Jamison 6, Henkelman 3, Buffel 3 and McLeod 2, while Swanek, Pateatz, Labrer, Williams, Hipkin and Jacobs were scoreless. Heideker led the Raiders with 17. Tomlison added 10, Jackson 4, Don Turner 2 and O’How 2, while Doan, Weber, Thumlery, Drever, Shipton, Schwartz and Klas were scoreless.
