In the quarterfinals, held in Edmonton, the Magrath Zeniths stomped the Lamont Lakers 72-38 as Rick Nelson scored 23, Bryan Sheer 15 and Craig Blumell 12. The Zeniths led 21-8, 43-19 and 62-30 at the quarters. Steve Sharum paced the Lakers with 13.
The Medicine Hat Crescent Heights Vikings clipped the Tofield Titans 46-35 as Lindsay Fraser scored 15. The Vikings led 14-9, 28-14 and 35-24 at the quarters. Henry Schroeder paced the Titans with 13.
Three Hills defeated the Edmonton St. Francis Xavier Rams 53-47 as Brian Ruegesegger scored 20. Three Hills led 16-12, 26-19 and 42-32 at the quarters. Brian Roberts paced the Rams with 18. The Rams (coached by Mike Dea) also included Bob Lecavalier, Brian L’Hirondelle.
In the last quarterfinal, the Stettler William E. Hay Wildcats crushed the Grande Prairie St. Joseph’s Celtics 52-32 after leading 18-5, 29-18 and 45-26 at the quarters. Don Herbeson paced the Wildcats with 22. Ed Williams added 11, Duncan Wells 10 and Ross McKinney 7. Colonel Maclellan paced the Celtics with 19. Gerald Lux added 9. The Celtics (coached by Joe MacLellan, manager Alfred Doll) also included Ed Johnston, Murray Smith, Don Wald, Tim Repetowski, Richard Baer, Len Glowinski, Gus Hartman, Vick Letendre, Phil Silvester and Richard Moon.
In the semis, the Medicine Hat Crescent Heights Vikings dumped Three Hills 56-38 as Rory MacDonald scored 16 and Lindsay Frazer 14. Ken Maerz paced Three hills with 12.
In the other semi, the Magrath Zeniths dusted the Stettler William E. Hay Wildcats 54-37 as Rick Nelson scored 23, Bryan Sheer 15 and Harley Frank 12. Dan Harbeson paced the Wildcats with 11. Ross McKinney added 8.
There is no evidence of a bronze medal playoff.
In the final, the Magrath Zeniths clubbed the Medicine Hat Crescent Heights Vikings (then the Drifters) 48-28 as Bryan Sheer scored 14, Harley Frank 12 and Rick Nelson 8. Lindsay Fraser paced the Vikings with 10. The score wsa knotted at 10 after one quarter. Magrath led 23-16 at the half and 33-23 after three quarters. The Zeniths wee coached by Tom Karren, a member of the senior men’s champ Lethbridge Brodeurs and an Olympian for Canada.
