Rams coach Bill Hackett told the Calgary Herald that “both teams played very good ball out there tonight and I’m not disappointed in our showing. You’ve got to give our boys a lot of credit for coming a long way. Just compare their showing tonight to the when we first met them and how they beat us at the first of the year. We had Inglis cut down to size but it was Morgan who beat us.”
In the provincial semis, held in Lethbridge, the host Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams dispatched the Calgary Western Canada Redmen 48-44 as Ev Nowlin scored 14, Glen Berry 14, Jim Furlong 12, Don Hughes 3, Don Doram 3 and Roger Terry 2, while Don Stouffer, Leroy Stanko, Tom Sindlinger and Peter Berry were scoreless. The Redmen led 13-6 after one quarter and 23-16 at the half. The Rams led 35-33 after three quarters. The score was knotted at 44 when Jim Furlong hit a jumper off a long offence rebound and Ed Nowlin hit a pair of free throws with nine seconds to play to ice the win. The Redmen were led by 6-10 post Bob Inglis, who scored 31. Bob Morgan added 7, Bill Gregory 4 and Smith 2, while Reid, Sheskey, Makin, Shelley, Patterson, Morris Dancyger, Ken Kaake and Roger Keith were scoreless.
In the other semi, the Magrath Zeniths edged the Edmonton Victoria Composite Redmen 45-43. The Redmen led 43-42 when Erwin Hovey hit a jumper to put the Zeniths in the lead and then Fred Blumel notched a free throw with 13 seconds to play as Magrath pulled out the win. A desperation shot to force overtime by Redmen guard Ted Frechette at the buzzer rolled around and out. Reed Chipman paced the Zeniths with 14. Alan Traxel added 10, Brent Ririe 9, Erwin Hovey 9 and Fred Blumel 3, while Bullock, Steed, Mehew, Woolsey and Larson were scoreless. Norm Korol and Ted Frechette each notched 11 to lead the Redmen. Bob Lindberg added 10, Strifler 5, Dudka 4 and Kay 2, while Day, Shenkariuk and Rosiewich were scoreless.
In the bronze medal match, the Calgary Western Canada Redmen clipped the Edmonton Victoria Composite Redmen 57-40. Western Canada led 13-11, 30-19 and 44-29 at the quarters. Bob Morgan paced Western Canada with 27. Bob Inglis added 19, Ken Kaake 10 and Bill Gregory 1, while Reid, Makin, Sheskey, Keith, Shelley, Patterson and Dancyger were scoreless. Irwin Strifler led Victoria with 9. Norm Korol added 8, Ted Frechette 8, Len Dudka 7, Bob Lindberg 6 and Shenkariuk 3, while Kay, Day, Rosiewich were scoreless.
In the final, the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams clubbed the Magrath Zeniths 80-54. Don Doram paced the Rams with 16. Jim Furlong added 15 and Ev Nowlin 14, Glen Berry 9 and Roger Terry 6, while Don Hughes, Don Stouffer, Tom Sindlinger, Leroy Stanko and Peter Berry were scoreless. Reed Chipman paced the Zeniths with 21. Fred Blumell added 13, Erwin Hovey 8, Brent Ririe 6, Al Traxel 2, Wolsey 2 and Larson 2, while Bullock, Steed and Mehew were scoreless. The Rams hit 23-37 from the line, while the Zeniths were 17-23. Four Zenith starters fouled out, including guard Erwin Hovey, Al Traxel, Brent Rine and Reed Chipman. One Ram, Roger Terry, fouled out. The Rams led 15-9, 33-23 and 47-31 at the quarters. Chipman hit a pair of buckets to rally the Zeniths within five with three minutes to play but the Rams hit 10 free throws down the stretch to ice it.
