-June 1/95: Grizzlies announce signing of 27-year-old point guard and free agent Kevin Pritchard to a two-year $575,000 deal. The former University of Kansas star had playing for eight different teams in the previous four seasons, including stints in the Spanish and Italian leagues. He spent the previous season with Quad Cities Thunder of Continental Basketball Association before a season-ending stint with the Miami Heat.

-June 24/95:In the NBA Expansion draft, the Grizzlies select: Greg Anthony (New York); Rodney Dent (Orlando); Antonio Harvey (LA Lakers); Reggie Slater (Denver); Trevor Ruffin (Phoenix); Derrick Phelps (Sacramento); Larry Stewart (Washington); Kenny Gattison (Charlotte); Byron Scott (Indiana); Gerald Wilkins (Cleveland); Benoit Benjamin (New Jersey); Doug Edwards (Atlanta); and Blue Edwards (Utah). Dent’s selection was a hands-off deal. Orlando gives Vancouver their second-round draft pick in the 1996 draft in exchange for his selection.

-June 28/95: With the fifth overall pick of the draft, the Grizzlies select Oklahoma State centre Bryant (Big Country) Reeves. “We got one of the biggest,” said general manager Stu Jackson. “B.C. is coming to B.C. We’re extremely excited to get Big Country into the fold. He’s a guy we really feel will endure the NBA season.” Reeves concedes he’ll have his work cut out for him. “I’ll have to step up my game. To go against (big centres) will be a dream.” In the second-round, the Grizzlies select Syracuse guard Lawrence Moten as the 36th overall pick. The 6-5 Moten averaged 19.6 ppg and is the all-time Big East scoring leader.

-July 1/95: Rodney Dent, Derrick Phelps, Trevor Ruffin and Reggie Slater become free agents.

-September 95: Among invitees to Grizzlies camp for rookies and free agents is Kory Hallas of Almonte, Ont. and the Canadian National team. Hallas had previously had a tryout with Minnesota in 1992.

-September 25/95: Sign Bryant Reeves to three-year contract worth $1.4-million in first year.

-October 3/95: Sign Lawrence Moten to a multi-year contract.       

-October 5/95: Sign contracts with Ashraf Amaya, Rich Manning, Henry James, Nate Higgs and Litterial Green.

-October 17/95: Waive Nate Higgs.

-October 18/95: Sign contract with Chris King.

-October 24/95: Waive Henry James.

-October 31/95: Waive Litterial Green.

-November 1/95: Trade the first Grizzlie, guard Kevin Pritchard, along with forward Larry Stewart, to the Orlando Magic for backup forward Anthony Avent. Pritchard ended up never having played a game for the Grizzlies. Avent had previously played in Europe for a year and had a two-year stint with the Milwaukee Bucks.

-November 3/95: Make a successful waiver claim for Darrick Martin.

-November 27/95: Trade Benoit Benjamin to Milwaukee Bucks for point guard Erick Murdock and centre Eric Mobley (18th overall pick in 1994). Benjamin’s contract was US$4-million per year. Waive Rich Manning.

-December 28/95: Waive Antonio Harvey.

-January 11/96: Trade Darrick Martin to Minnesota for a 1996 2nd-round draft choice. Re-sign Rich Manning for the remainder of the season.

-February 22/96: Trade Kenny Gattison and a 1996 second round pick to Orlando for Jeff Turner.

-March 8/96: Waive Jeff Turner.

-April 3/96: Sign Cuonzo Martin to a 10-day contract. Nine days later, they sign him for the remainder of the season.

-June 19/96: Trade two 2nd-round picks in the 1996 draft (30th and 42nd overall) and a 2nd-round pick in the 1997 draft to the Houston Rockets for Pete Chilcutt, Tim Breaux and a first round pick in the 1996 draft (22nd overall), a 2nd-round pick in the 1996 overall (51st overall) and a conditional 2nd-round pick in the 1997 draft.

Season wrap

        Won their first two games of the season but it went downhill from there.   The Grizzlies won a mere 15 games. Record was 15-67. Previous expansion teams results: the Dallas Mavericks in 80-81 won 23, the Charlotte Hornets in 88-89 won 20, the Miami Heat in 88-89 won 15, the Orlando Magic in 89-90 won 18 and the Minnesota Timberwolves in 89-90 won 22. Early in season, Grizzlies set NBA record for most successive losses by an expansion team (19). Later in season broke that record with 23 straight losses. Highlight of season was winning home opener against Minnesota Timberwolves. Averaged 17,183 season in attendance. Shareef Abdur-Rahim finishes third (28 votes among league coaches) in voting for rookie of the year voting. The sole unanimous choice for all-rookie team.
