In the semi-finals, Vancouver Kirby’s Clippers defeated New Brunswick Keddy’s 66-53 as Debbie Huband scored 16, and Joanne Sargent and Gail Klaver each added 14. The Keddy’s were led by Coleen Dufresne and Cathy Maxwell with 10 points apiece.
In the other semi, the Halifax Red Fox nipped Edmonton Motors 65-64. Halifax led for most of the contest but Alberta took a 64-63 lead with a minute to go. But Carol Rosenthal nailed a 15-foot jumper with 10 seconds to go to give Halifax the lead. A Faith Rostad shot with two seconds to go rolled off the rim. Jill Tasker led Halifax with 23, while Rosenthal added 16. Trix Kannekens paced Edmonton with 24 while Rostad scored 16.
In the battle for seventh, Sharon Harron and Sherrydawn Jones each scored 15 as Toronto Official Sports Centre (coach Paul Speisman, coach Sydney Brooker) defeated the Winnipeg St. Vital Grads 89-77. Sherly Jones added 11. Lynn Scott led Winnipeg with 19. Susan Johnson added 17 and Leslie Wright 14. Toronto led 39-32 at the half.
In the battle for fifth, the Regina Springers scored the last 11 points of the first half to dispatch the Montreal Voyageurs, eventually winning 77-58. Sue MacKenzie and Sharon Douglas each scored 12. The Springers (coached by Wendy BileskI) also included Betty Fornwald, Diana Stober, Debbie Smith, Theresa king, Patti Woods, Cathy Reesor, Rene Robertson, Lorraine MacCormick, Teri Prokopanko and Patti Mayer. Paddie Chiara led Montreal with 18. Dany Brown added 14. Saskatchewan led 37-22 at the half.
In the bronze medal match, New Brunswick Keddy’s scored the last 9 points of game in the final three minutes to take a 72-61 win over Edmonton Motors. Claire Mitton led New Brunswick with 22. Cathy Maxwell added 18 and Nelda Robbins 12. “It was nice to see,” said coach Joyce Slipp, who missed the first two games of the tourney while giving birth to a baby boy. “I was very worried we were too tired. The game was close and they did it. They came through when we need it.” Trix Kannekens led Alberta with 16. Sharon Bieleny added 12 and Glynis Griffiths 10. NB pulled of a 6-0 run to take an early 29-20 lead but Alberta rallied to cut the margin to 35-34 at the half. NB led 51-50 after three quarters and then exploded in the final frame.
In the final, the Halifax Red Fox defeated Vancouver Kirby’s Clippers 68-67 in overtime. The game was tied at 30 at the half and at 52 after regulation play. Halifax was led by Carol Rosenthal’s 24 points, including a bucket at the buzzer from halfcourt to tie the game at the break. Jill Tasker added 14 and 7 boards, while Patti Langille scored 13, including a three-point play in overtime. Anne Murray scored two in overtime and grabbed 9 rebounds. Vancouver was led by Gail Kalver with 16, Joanne Sargeant 14 and 12 rebounds, Debbie Huband 12 and Tara Smith 12 pts and 10 boards. National team member Bev Barnes was held scoreless. Vancouver out-rebounded Halifax 33-31 and outshot them 43-41% after shooting 26-60 from the floor. Halifax was 2561 from the floor. But Halifax was 7-7 from the line, while Vancouver was 4-9. Coach Allan Waye noted that “we believe this is the first ever national women’s championship in basketball for Nova Scotia. It was a credit to the team to beat B.C. which had so many national team players. We were able to go nine players deep while they went seven. I think that along without preparation, made the difference. An elated Rosenthal said “what a game. What a game. I’m so excited. Oh, wow! I can’t believe it. We’re national champs.” Rosenthal scored 10 points in the first quarter as New Brunswick took a 16-14 lead and later nailed a 25-footer to tie the game at half. Nova Scotia took an early four-point lead in the second half, while holding BC scoreless four five minutes. The teams were tied at 40 after the quarter and at 52 after the regulation, tournament MVP Joanne Sargeant missed a chance to win when a shot bounced off the rim with three seconds to play. “We were pressured and we didn’t handle it well,” said Sargeant. “We were all a bit tight, Even with our experience, we were nervous.” In the extra session, Patti Hutchison drove to the hoop with 1:20 to play and was fouled as she scored, adding the free throw, as Halifax took a 57-54 lead. Debbie Huband cut the margin to one with a layup with 21 seconds to play. Halifax turned over the ball by stepping out of bounds. BC inbounded it but Halifax stole it and ran out the clock. “Our goal was just to get to the final game,” said Rosenthal. “We thought before the game we had a chance (of winning). I think we were deeper. We’re in better shape.”
