In the final, the Whitehorse Porter Creek Rams defeated the Whitehorse Vanier Catholic Secondary Crusaders 81-65. It was bittersweet for their five senior starters. “This was our last game together,” said tournament MVP Sina Kazemi told the Yukon News. “We knew it was all or nothing. This is truly the end of an era for us. It’s amazing. We’ve been playing since Grade 8 and we’ve all stuck together.” Rams coach Logan Wedge said “Vanier has really improved since the start of the year. The way they’ve played the past two weeks … wow … I’m glad we got them now before they got any better. … We knew if we played our game, we could win.” Wedge said Chad Curlew and Sam John’s speed proved the difference, along with Kazemi’s perimeter shooting. “They have to respect him at the three-point line, but the thing is, he can also drive and score, so he makes it tough. We’re a tiny team … only three guys are over six feet tall. But we’re the fastest team and one of the toughest. We won’t back down.” The Rams opened with a 23-4 first quarter and romped. The Rams finished (22-2) on the campaign. Kazemi told the Whitehorse Star that team play proved the difference. “That’s how we always play and that’s what won us this championship.”
