In the final, the Whitehorse Vanier Catholic Secondary Crusaders whipped the Whitehorse Porter Creek Rams 95-69. The Crusaders shot the lights out. Johnny King paced the Crusaders with 17. Jared Hougen added 15. Rob Driscoll-McKinnon led the Rams with 23. Justin Hendrie added 13. Crusaders coach Sean McCarron said the near loss to the Rams in round robin play “was the best thing that’s happened to us all year. We came back from 12 down in the fourth quarter to beat them. That was probably the highlight of the year.” McCarron added that his squad played their best game of the season in the final. “Their strength is their toughness and intensity, as well as their speed. They’re a very fast team. But we had size. I knew going in our size would be our advantage. But also, the balance I have on this team, with shooting, passing, defense and just smarts.” McCarron added that his bench was outstanding. “It’s about finding out how to win.” McCarron added that Grade 11 point guards, Aaron McKenzie and Eric Gray, were exceptional. “Point guard is the most important, high-pressure position on the floor. And those two guys played really well. …. We shut Robert (Driscol-McKinnon) down. Robert is a phenomenal player. We basically played 14 players against him, trying to shut him down. And that’s what they did.” Chief and King did a great job to contain Driscoll-McKinnon to 23, he said. Driscoll-McKinnon said “everyone played awesome this year. If it wasn’t for the coaches, we wouldn’t be here. We just had some bad luck tonight. We just didn’t step it up as much as we needed to. Vanier played a good game.”
