In the opening contest, the Richmond Merchants slaughtered Edmonton Jasper Place Auto Parts 68-37 as Shirley Topley scored 31, including 16 in the first half. Shepherd added 19, Lorenz 6, Coward 4, Thomson 3, Farrell 2, Whitehead 2 and Bailey 1, while Malesh and Bion were scoreless. The Merchants led 31-7 at the break. Carol Sorenson led Auto Parts with 9. Harvie added 9, Mousseau 6, Archibald 6 and Currie 1, while Haverlock, Menage and Bedard were scoreless.
In round two, the Richmond Merchants cleaned up on the Saskatoon Adilman Aces 68-45 as Zoe Shepherd scored 19, Shelagh Farrell 11, Joan Lorenz 10, Shirley Topley 9, Cathy Thomson 8, Bev Coward 7, Marg Whitehead 4 and Malesh 2, while Bion was scoreless. The Merchants led 48-29 at the break. Judy Jenkin led the Aces with 20. Carol Johns added 10, Eleanor Edwards 8, Gloria Wesley 8, Peggy Robb 4, Diane Hanysh 2 and Pat Dobbie 1, while Marlene Ackerman, Faye Herrick and Ruth Budney were scoreless.
The semis provide controversy as Edmonton eliminated Saskatoon 44-43. Edmonton was ahead 10-6, 17-11 and 28-24 at the half. But Gloria Wasley tied it for Saskatoon with eight minutes to go. Donna Zimmerman hit a bucket to give Edmonton a 44-41 lead in the final minute. Carol Johns hit a field goal to narrow the final margin at the buzzer. Edmonton was paced by Carol Sorenson 14, Darlene Currie 10 and Betty Lou Archibald 8. Zimmerman added 2, Bedard 2 and Mousseau 2, while Haverlock and Menage were scoreless. The Aces received 16 from Diane Hanysh. Johns added 9, Wasley 8. Judy Jenkins was held to four before fouling out in the final quarter, and Robb 2, while Edwards, Dobbie, Herrick and Budney were scoreless. After the game, the Aces protested a time-clock error but the protest was disallowed as officials ruled that “mechanical difficulties” were the cause of the loss of three-to-five minutes of time during the first half. A discrepancy of 10 seconds per minute was discovered at halftime, which meant the teams could have lost as much as three minutes in playing time. But it was not tacked on the second half. Saskatoon coach Bob Stayner told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that his Aces “played listlessly and didn’t seem to have the desire or fight necessary to win.”
The final saw Richmond emerge with a 38-31 win, although Edmonton led 12-8 at the quarter, 23-19 at the half and 29-26 at the three-quarter mark. The Merchants went ahead by three with two minutes to go and froze the ball to the final buzzer. Edmonton promptly fouled Zoe Sheperd, who hit both free throws. The Auto Parts missed a bucket at the end of the floor and then fouled Joan Lorenz, who nailed both here free throws to put the game out of reach. Shelagh Farrell led the Merchants with 9. Shepherd added 8, Joan Lorenz 7, Topley 6, Coward 4 and Thomson 4, while Malesh, Bion, Whitehead and Bailey were scoreless. Carol Sorenson paced Edmonton with 10. Jean Harvie added 5, Currie 4, Archibald 4, Menage 4, Bedard 2 and Haverlock 2, while Zimmerman and Mousseau were scoreless.
