In the semis, the Goulds St. Kevin’s Mavericks clipped the Avondale Roncalli Cardinals 81-32 as Michelle Bartlett scored 18 and Sheena Fleming 10. Danielle Dunphy led Roncalli with 8. Melanie Badcock added 8.
In the other semi, the Trepassey Stella Maris Mermaids defeated the St. John’s Gonzaga Vikings 64-55 as Karyn Power scored 20 and Melissa Molloy 19. Pam Flynn led the Vikings with 19.
In the final, the Goulds St. Kevin’s Mavericks coasted to an 83-52 win over the Trepassey Stella Maris Mermaids while winning their first 4A crown and capping a (40-0) campaign. “The girls are very proud of their effort this season and they should be,” coach Clarence Sutton told the St. John’s Telegram. “They worked their butts off all year and they deserved to win. … Stella Maris is a good young team and they deserve a lot of credit. Luckily for us, it was our year. It’s been a long time since any team in any high school sport went undefeated.” Michelle Bartlett paced St. Kevin’s with 28. Shannon Hayden added 13 and Sheena Fleming 12. Karen Hartery led the Mermaids with 12. Wanda Waddleton added 10.
