In the semis, the Clarenville Cougars whipped the Deer Lake Elwood Regional Lakers 58-38 as Chris Williams and Ryan Perry each scored 12. Kodee White led the Lakers with 16. Cameron Sparkes added 13. “We had the lead from the beginning but Deer Lake started coming back,” said Cougars coach Andrew Sanger. “They were within three points in the fourth quarter but we sank a couple of three-pointers and ended up winning.”
In the other semi, Grand Falls-Windsor Exploits Valley defeated the Conception Bay South Holy Spirit Falcons 67-61 as Daniel Hayley scored 24 and Michael Hughes 17.
In the final, the Clarenville Cougars defeated the Grand Falls-Windsor Exploits Valley Eagles 60-55 to avenge three regular season losses. “We were down by 14 in the second quarter,” Cougars coach Andrew Sanger said. “Lee Pike, our point guard, sank a three-pointer from half court as time ran out at halftime. That put us down by seven.” At halftime, “I basically told the guys, win or lose, it doesn’t matter to me,” he said. “We’ve already won because we made it to provincials. I’m proud of you guys. The only thing you need to do as individuals and as teammates, is make sure that when you leave the floor, win or lose, you tried your hardest. You will be ok with winning and you will be ok with losing. You will never regret it.” The Cougars got Exploits Valley in foul trouble in the second half. With two minutes left, the Cougars led by eight but Exploits hit a pair of treys to cut the lead to two. The teams traded baskets until the Cougars were fouled and iced the win at the line. Sanger said co-captains Williams and Pike “probably played their best game since I first coached them back in grade six. Lee kept control of the pace and ran the offence while Chris attacked the net and drew a lot of fouls.” Sanger explained that this team now has four gold medals and one silver medal over the last five years at provincial championships and couldn’t be more proud of the efforts he has seen from his squad over the years. “It is a great team and a testament to their abilities. They are a group of fine young men that are smart and easy to coach.” Chris Williams paced the Cougars with 27. Lee Pike added 21. Colin Spencer led the Eagles with 19. Ibrahim Dodger added 13.
