In the final, the St. John’s Gonzaga Vikings defeated the Corner Brook Regional Titans 77-66 as Colin Connors scored 18 and Curtis Mullowney 11. It was the eighth tournament title for the Vikings on the campaign. “I think we’re going to have to find more space on the wall for the banners,” Vikings coach Yasir Khan told the St. John’s Telegram. “You know, we received strong performances from everyone throughout the tournament, but today I really have to give credit to our two co-captains. Colin Connors, who is in Grade 11, had 18 points, six assists and five points and made some clutch (three-pointers). And Christian Greenland, who is going to MUN next season, had nine points and 10 rebounds for us. He really controlled the boards today.” The Vikings forced 40 turnovers. “I give credit to them for what they’ve done with a very young team,” said Khan. “They have some great players like (Grade 10 student) Nathan Barker, who was very strong in today’s game and throughout the tournament. … The boys practised more than any other team I have had. Three times a week, they were in the gym at 7 a.m. and working hard. And they worked hard today. They wanted this and it showed. We were down by seven points at one point in the third quarter, but then we went on a 16-0 run and didn’t look back. They don’t quit. They just try harder.” Nathan Barker led the Titans with 27, along with 13 boards. Mark Rowsell added 12, along with 10 boards, and Christopher Dobbin 8, along with 7 boards.
